COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
E.S.B. stands for Extra Special Bitter. This is the strongest of the English Bitters. Our E.S.B. is brewed to about the strength of our Stout with a deep amber color. We used Pale Ale Malt, Crystal Malts and Biscuit malt to give this beer a firm malt foundation. The Hop level is towards the high end, nearly equaling that of the Copperhead. We have chosen to used English hops exclusively for this beer. UK Challenger hops are used for bittering and UK Fuggle hops for dry hopping.

Tangy, fruity aroma, with a moderate amount of herbal and spicy hop and developing degrees of earthiness and cedar-like woodiness. Darker orange-amber color, clear, persistent head and lacing. Flavor profile is hoppy and fruity with a touch of demerara sugar mid-point and a dry, bittersweet, moderately astringent finish. Aftertaste is reminiscent of tea leaves and tangerine. Decent balance. Medium bodied and quite smooth on the palate.

2006 cask on tap @ FS; a cloudy amber copper with a minimal off-white head, great lacing. Aroma of hops, floral, some spice. Taste follows the same, nice bitter bite with a very smooth finish. A great ESB, recommended.

At the brewery...Solid E.S.B. Compares favorably to Fuller’s. Hoppy like Free State’s normal Pale Ale, yet lighter with more flavor. Nice crisp bitter finish.

Reddish color, off white head. Malty/hoppy aroma. The beer starts out with sweet malty flavors and it morphs into a mild hoppiness with floral notes. Somewhat bitter and dry finish.

At the brewpub ... Dark copper red. Caramel aroma. Rusty and almost nutty caramels with a medium bitterness. Decent.

This is a very accomplished bitter. Nice complexity in the aroma, fruity and caramel in classic proportions. Wonderful hop essence, a nice touch over and above the English norm. Not much bitterness effect in the flavor--there is some, but it isn’t of the lingering "mouthfeel"/astringent variety, only a nice dry departure from the tastebuds. Carbonation is somewhat subtle, with a smooth palate. Excellent interpretation of the style.

Wonderful roasty, evident English hop aroma. Signature Free State in terms of quality. I'm glad they kept the hops under control. Head lingered even after poured from a growler that had been opened for 12+ hours. Perfect amount of carbonation and lasting cereal/bready finish.
