COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is sort of a dark version of the Hefe Weizen. The actual style for this beer is "Dunkel Weizen" which literally means dark wheat. The flavor is a bit more complex than the Hefe Weizen owing largely to a greater variety of malts. This is brewed with pale, wheat, caramel and roasted malts. The wheat gives it a tart finish, the caramel malt provides color and some background sweetness and the roasted malts provide color and flavor. The hops used are Hersbrucker for bittering and for aroma, but they are not a prominent part of the profile. Much more prominent is the yeast character provided by that crazy German weizen yeast that we used in the Hefe Weizen. It combines with the malts to make this a very flavorful and unique beer.

Growler picked up at the brewery for me by beastiefan2k. Pour is a hazed brown, copper ruby with pretty settling that created a nice one inch off-whte / tan head. Nice, sticky, lacing is left behind as the head falls. Aroma is initially banana yeastiness, sweet and ripe. Beneath is wheat. Taste is wheat, some caramel sweetness, and the banana sweet yeastiness from the nose. As Greg noted, there is also a peaty smokiness present in the beer that is interesting. Palate is medium, though is slickly drinkable too. The finish is a lot more of the smokiness, and is a dry ashiness which was really off-putting. Overall, a decent enough beer. Growler courtesy of beastiefan2k. Thanks for bringing this back from Lawrence, Eugene! Pours a hazy Dr. Pepper reddish-brown with a sizable, fluffy, off-white head that laces nicely. The nose is of sweet dark, almost peaty malt, wheat malt, caramel, cocoa and light spicy and banana esters. Light-bodied without being particularly thin, the mouthfeel is lightly dry and wheaty with a touch of astringency at the finish. The flavor is a touch too spicy and astringent for my tastes. It features all the same notes highlighted in the nose, especially the burnt caramel/peat, cocoa and spicy yeast notes, but the proportions are a bit off for me. I’m kicking myself for missing the hefeweizen, I have a feeling that I would have preferred it to this one.

Draft pint. Aroma of sweet, dark malts, lightly roasty and bready with notes of wheat malt, caramel, lemony citrus, heavily spicy yeast and faint cocoa. Clear deep, dark red-amber color with a lasting, fine head. Flavor is sweet, very gently roasty and spicy with plenty of clove, banana, toasty caramel malt sugars, and a very gently herbal hop bitterness towards the finish, which is long and full of lingering spice. Fairly thin in effervescence, but mouthfeel is thick and smooth all the same, with a medium body. Interesting enough.

On tap at the brewpub Mostly clear. Sort of brown, but not really. I just don’t know what else to call it. A little white head.
The aroma and flavor were pretty much the same. Sort of caramel and a touch of roast. It made me think of chocolate cover bananas.
Light body with lots of carbonation.
There nothing wrong here, but its just nothing to get excited about.

I had several at the brewpub last week, this rating is from a growler that I brought home. Served in a Free State shaker glass. Aroma is very malty, with melanoidins, and a some dark caramel & chocolate notes. The yeast seems pretty muted in the aroma, just a touch of banana comes through, maybe some clove. Dark amber color with a short ;lived one fingered head. Taste is bubblegum esters, mild banana, caramel, rich malt, and some light earthy hops. The finish is malty with mild to moderate bitterness (for the style) and there is also a hint of ash/roast that I get which seems a little out of place. Enjoyable, yes, but not something I would go back for.
