COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"As long as I am an American citizen and American blood runs in these veins, I shall hold myself at liberty to speak, to write, and to publish whatever I please on any subject." An early abolitionist, champion of free speech and newspaper publisher, Elijah P. Lovejoy took his own words to heart and died living up to them. On three occasions, his printing press was destroyed by pro-slavery factions who wanted to stop his publishing of abolitionist views. In November of 1837 a pro-slavery mob convened on Lovejoy’s fourth printing press in Alton, Illinois with the intention of destroying it by fire. When Lovejoy attempted to intervene he was shot five times with a shotgun and died on the spot. Subsequently, Lovejoy was hailed as a martyr by the abolitionist movement. In response to the murder of Elijah P. Lovejoy, John Brown publicly vowed: “Here, before God, in the presence of these witnesses, from this time, I consecrate my life to the destruction of slavery!” History lesson aside, this flavorful IPA borrows much of its malt bill from the Homestead IPA. It departs from that beer in it’s uniquely American hop presence. Hopped with massive amounts of Centennial hops in flavor, aroma, and dry hop additions, Lovejoy IPA is a medium bodied, dark straw hop monster. The citrus character of Centennial hops can be best described as tropical fruit (a la Juicy Fruit). The fruity qualities marry with the clean maltiness and hint of sweetness provided by ethanol in this hefty IPA.

Draft in Lawrence. Nice brownish-orange color with a medium white head. Nice aroma of juicy, citrus hops. Nice sweeter, citrus flavor from the hops that finishes with a well balanced bitterness. Well done.

Clear golden orange with a fizzy white head. Citrus grassy and pine hops aroma and taste with a vanilla malt flavor balancing the bitterness. Nice smooth palate.

On tap @ Free State. Slightly burnt orange appearance with a white head. Earthy, piney hoppy nose. Piney hoppy flavor on a pretty good malty body.

Pours a clear dark gold with a sticky, fluffy, ecru head that leaves cascading lace upon the glass. The nose is big and bright, highlighting fruity, resinous and piny hop notes over a clean pale malt backbone; nice. Fairly light-bodied for an IPA, it has a finely carbonated mouthfeel transitioning to a slightly drying and solidly bitter finish. The flavor is of fruity, resinous and piny hops over a subdued malt canvas. As they should be in an IPA, the hops are the star here, with a long lingering fruity/floral bitterness after the swallow. This is a nice departure from Free State’s typical APA/IPA formula, with what seems a greater emphasis on the aroma and bittering hops. I like this one quite a bit.

Tap @ FS. Pours a clear amber with a minimal head of large bubbles. Aroma is floral, light resin, and some citrus. Flavor has a nice resiny bitterness, along with more citrus and floral overtones. I found this to be slightly more aggressive than their typical IPA, which worked for me.

10 oz pour in a thinned tulip glass at the brewpub. Pour copper golden ruby - smallish off white head. Perfect patch lace. Aroma of floral orange hop and bready semi-sweet malt. Nice balance. Taste is the hop initially, introducing resin along with the floral and citrus. In the taste more peel than fruit. The middle turns to the bready malt, which loses its sweetness in the taste. Palate is earthy mineral, medium body, above average carbonation. Clean and straight forward, nice.
