Sweet caramel. Slight bitterness but this was realy lacking as far as the complexity is concerned. Way too malty without the hops to balance. ElGaucho (1730), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Oct 30, 2005 Updated: Dec 28, 2005A friend picked this up from the Free State brewery and watched them pour the growler on 10/27/05. I cracked it on 10/29/05. Although the aroma was very promising, with some unique hempy bitterness, the flavor was quite flat and not reminiscent of barleywine at all. It’s almost as if they poured the wrong beer. It didn’t taste 10.5% at all. The trademark rich complexity of a barleywine was just not there. It was a reasonably quaffable brew with some roasted malt, and that hempy bitterness, but I never would have guessed it was a barleywine. I paid $25 for this growler and ended up pouring half of it out. Very, very disappointing. JK (2968), Richfield, Minnesota, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Oct 29, 2005 My thanks to Wawood for this treat. I did not think there were freshness issues with the growler. The aroma is grassy hops. A black barleywine? Yes. Yes it is. Still. There is some malt sweetness and a sour, grassy flavor. Palate is a little thin for a barleywine. The alcohol is hidden very well. More of a bitter hops rather than sweet barleywine. Pleasant. badgerben (3610), Blaine, Minnesota, USA

Woah, that’s an outstanding color on a barley wine! Very interesting aroma that hints at herbal. The table finally settled on hemp. The taste was very bland and disappointing. Bitter malt with some sugar, but it was getting a Windex quality. It was fresh, only 2 days old, but it just did not impress me. Kevin (1920), Colorado, USA

Re-rate, hand bottled and sent by Theisti. Thanks, Tim! The electrical tap around the cap is a nice touch, by the way! Sorry, but I’m gonna have to stick by my original rating. Not my cup of barleywine. lilannie (384), State College, Pennsylvania, USA
