Our 2nd annual collaboration with 23rd St. Brewery and Blind Tiger Brewery in honor of American Craft Beer Week is a bold and wonderful example of Craft Beer’s commitment to tradition, collaboration, and innovation. This is a Grätzer/Grodziskie (pronounced great sir); a pale-straw, 100% Oak Smoked-Wheat beer that dominated Polish beer production from the 1400s until the last commercial producer shuttered in the 1990s and the style, sadly, fell into extinction. The beer has a light, but firm smoke character, a dense and rocky head, a hint of tartness from the wheat malt, and the slightly spicy character of Polish Lublin hops. Exceedingly effervescent, delicate, and refreshing, this is a beer style to be embraced once again. Fear not the smoke.

On tap at Free State. Pours a light yellow color with white head. Smoke, straw, wheat, lemon, spicy flavors. Interestin, but not my thing.

Tap @ Free State. Pours a hazy very light yellow appearance with a white head and nice lacing. Woody smoky, lemon zesty, somewhat spicy, light campfire aroma. Somewhat bitter, light apple/lemon, grainy woody smoky flavor. A lot cleaner version than Blind Tiger’s release and pretty interesting.

Tap at Free State. Low haze ultra light white srm. Poofy white meringue head. Great lacing. Smoke and butter nose. Taste is suddy, some smoke and buttered toast. Saltiness and savoriness. Nose is smokey but really nearing rancid browned butter. Taste is suddy, tangy lemon, loads of soap move to moderate grassy hops. Palate light and soapy. Strange, but fun to try.

On draft at the brewpub. Aroma of wheaty grain, faint smoke, slight phenols, some esters and light tartness with hints of clove, banana and lemongrass in the background. Lightly hazy pale yellow-green in color, head is fading and sparse. Flavor profile is lightly tart, grainy and smoky, tangy and rather refreshing, slightly peppery with more spice, faint banana esters and lemon tones. Actively effervescent on the palate, light and almost watery (but not in a bad way), just very light-bodied. I haven’t had anything like it, but it’s good!

This is one of the only beers Free State has been associated with that I couldn’t really drink. Tastes like lunch meat.

On tap at the brewpub during American Craft Beer Week. Comes a somewhat cloudy gold with an average white head. Aroma of smoke and malt. Taste is smoke, malt, grain, and spice. Very enjoyable.

So glad Tom added this because I did not want to go though the effort. Had this on tap at the brewpub. Strong smoke with an underlying light airy wheat character. Strong yet light on the nose. Flavor has a heavy smoke flavor but a very light beer. Boggles the senses. Easy drinking light body. Drinking this like nothing all he time. Loved it, will be picking up a growler as soon as I get back into town.

Pours a lightly hazy golden with a foamy white lacing head. Aroma of lightly smoked malt, fresh baked bread and burnt toast. Flavor of light smoked malt, toasted rye bread and lemon.
