Had at the KC Bier Meisters Homebrew competition. Steve Brandt brought out a 5G keg of this and the Emancipation Pale Ale. The color is brown with a khaki, creamy head. The aroma is nutty. Flavor is nutty and malty with some mild chocolate flavors. Nice mouthfeel. Nutty, chocolate finish. I’m glad I got it free.

Sweet, malty aroma, some dark brown sugar and faint roastiness, not exactly coffeeish but earthy to a certain extent. Some very gentle wafts of dark fruitiness as well. Deep, dark brown color, nearing black, with a rocky, uneven, dun-colored head that subsided. Flavor is distinctly bittersweet, again very lightly roasty and with a moderate amount of sweetness, a certain dark fruitiness again becoming apparent, and finishing with a lightly bitter tang and notes of nuts and semi-sweet chocolate. Light-medium body with a smooth mouthfeel, thanks in part to the lower level of effervescence. Actually a pretty interesting beer, I definitely never would have guessed it was from the second runnings of Owd Mac’s.

A "small" or table beer. Nutty, chewy malt flavors lasted for about .25 seconds. Watery. Doesn't appear to be filtered, as almost all of Free State's beers are. Aroma was the highlight - earthy rye and honey combined with light malt and a touch of licorice. If you really really must rate this, get the 90 cent sample.
