Freedom Organic Lager is the lightest in colour of the three lagers. It has a rounded malty flavour with a subtle bitterness and smooth caramel undertone. It is made with organic hops and malt. Britain’s first ever microbrewed lager has been one of the brewing world’s best-kept secrets. Freedom Organic Lager has been obtaining awards for excellence and building a loyal following amongst discerning drinkers, and has recently been Highly Commended by The Times and The Soil Association in The Organic Awards 2008.

Bottle, a slightly carbonated golden straw colour with a white bubbly head. A generously malty aroma for a lager, with a touch of fruit crispiness to it. Sweet and fruity at teh first taste, slight honeyish. Through the swalow it becomes the more familiar dry and grassy lager, but still carries some of those earlier flavours. A little over-carboated for my liking, but one of the more complex and enjoyable lagers I have tasted. And to add - it just got better and better through the glass.

330ml Brown bottle, best before 18 Aug 2011, this was the second beer in my random tasting evening on 12 Aug 2011. Poured into a Veltins Pilsner badged stemmed tulip glass: looked good, usual pale gold body with the snowy white head you’d expect to see on a lager/pilsner. The aroma wasn’t strong, but there were hints of caramel and malty molasses if you sniffed hard enough. The taste was a pleasant blend of dry hoppiness and a front of sweeter malt flavours. I can’t pretend to be a big lager/pilsner fan, but this one was OK and certainly different and more interesting compared to the mass produced ones I’ve reviewed or drank when on holiday in hotter places than the UK.

Gusher. Medium white head. Clear yellow body with a fair amount of carbonation. Strawy caramel aroma with grape and paper notes. Dry-sweetish earthy caramelly straw taste with rye crisp bread notes. Mid-bodied. Mild mouthfeel. Dryish grape and spice aftertaste with floral notes. Very nice, and highly drinkable. (0.33l bottle, from a shop in Barnes, London.)

Whilst the appearance wasn’t as enticing as the Freedom Dark Lager variation, the balance of flavours in this one is much better. Nicely hopped like an English Summer ale with floral, grassy notes, without being overpoweringly hopped. Touch of minerally sourness/bitterness on the finish. Good example of a drinkable English lager.

330ml bottle. Pours light golden with a large head. Aroma is sweet, some grass and bread. Some sweetness starts and some honey and grass to finish. Was expecting a bit more.

Tap at Bree Louise, London. Pours a semi-clear, pale yellow with a faint, fizzy head. Corn and cereal malt aroma. Sweet, malty flavor with grain and straw. Faintly bitter. Light to medium in body with fizzy carbonation. Finishes clean and rather sweet with hints of apples. Not too shabby,

Fizzy and grainy, little to recommend about this one. Prefer more standard pale lagers mostly.

Pours light gold and has a mild, grainy malt aroma. The flavor has the sweet, pale malt along with some mild hop bitterness. It’s pretty much another boring lightly hopped lager. Better than some....
