COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle and keg - filtered but unpasteurised.
Freedom Pilsner is made with a blend of liberty and saaz hops, which produced a full bodied lager with a citrus hop aroma and lavishly satisfying aftertaste. To produce Freedom Pilsener we’ve re-assembled the original Freedom brewery and bought a much larger brewery set-up from the States to cope with demand. We’re located on a green field site with its own supply of the famous Burton water, (acknowledged to be among the best brewing water in the world) drawn from the alabaster layer of limestone, which has attracted brewers to the Burton area for over three hundred years. This is pumped direct to our brewery from natural underground sources. We’re also growing our own barley on the farmland and bottling and kegging our beer at the brewery so we can control every element of the beer we produce. To perfect the recipe, we tracked down Master Brewer Ian Ward, who developed the original Freedom Lager back in ’95, when it was the first micro-brewed lager in Britain.

3rd Beer of my random tasting evening on 12 Aug 2011. The brown 330ml bottle had 12 days life left when poured into a Veltins Pilsner badged stemmed tulip. Regular Pilsner/Lager look: golden, clear and bright, the pure white head produced some good lacing as the beer sank down the glass. Being made with a blend of liberty and saaz hops ensures there is a citrusy feel to the beer both in taste and in the aroma given off. Although not strong, there was a grapefruit hint throughout the tasting and it added a nice dimension to the beer. I’m never going to be a huge lager/pilsner fan, but this sits highly in my eyes and if it was a hot day I’d consider having another.

UPDATED: MAR 17, 2012 On tap at Cock & Hoop, High Pavement, Nottingham. Typical pils looks - pale, clear yellow; high carbonation; small, patchy head. Mild aroma - slight citric, a little grass. Nice wheaty, yeasty, subtly sweet taste - especially refreshing after the highly hoppy number I’d had before. I enjoyed this but can’t quite put my finger on why because no one thing about it was particularly remarkable.

330ml bottle, thanks to Finn for sharing. Unclear, golden body topped by a decent, chalk white head. Pale malty nose alongside a touch of dusty hops. Malt-accented taste with floral-fruity notes. Refreshing malt-bitter end. Soft in the mouth. Ordinary (session in Tromsø, 09.02.2012).
