| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 12, 2004 Black, tiniest bit of brown around the edges, virtually no head on this thick beer. Aroma was slightly chocolatey. Flavor was a lovely blend of chocolate, dark fruit, and an essence of liquor, but all with a restrained English sensibility. A fine beer that grew in complexity as it warmed. Most impressive. Grandpa (325), Verona, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 28, 2004 A good tight head, not quite creamy. A strong brew with heavy coffee overtones. Bitter aftertaste more like bitter coffee than hop bitterness. The sediment promised on the label from a bottle conditioned brew was missing from my bottle jimhilt (1694), Bow, New Hampshire, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 12, 2004 Pours a one-fingered deep tan head that goes slowly and leaves a good lace. Black as the ace spades. light to moderate carbonation. Smokey, malty nose. Starts and finishes malty but with some medicinal overtones. Sweeter than a Guinness. Medium to heavy bodied. $5.50 for a 550ml bottle from Colonial Spirits in Acton, Ma. ruffian (149), montvale, New Jersey, USA

Roast aroma, at times it seems to be a bit smoked or dirty, but only in a fleeting way. Lots of bitterness, lingering and dukeing it out with the sweetness, and winning in the end. Oh yea, there’s some chocolate in there too. It’s good. Chupa LaHomebrew (12), Gahanna, Ohio, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Apr 22, 2004 I'm gonna have to go against the grain on this one. This is a good beer with the exeption of one critical factor: it is excessively bitter. To each his or her own, but I don't need to try this one again. TomSpears (65), Norfolk, England
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 14, 2004 This is better. Another one from the Best list, but this time something half decent. Not earth-shattering, but a decent sort of Irish stout and nicely bottled. Not bad.
