COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Also available bottle conditioned.
Dark but light in flavour, well defined aroma of Fuggles hops in the nose, and hints of the lighter side of this complex hop, an excellent Porter for drinkers who enjoy dark beers but are looking for the underlying flavours of a premium strength beer, rather than the lower gravity dark mild end of this style of Classic Northern style of British beer, more akin to the traditional London porter. Dark, roasted malts get a chance to show their softer side as they delicately dance in an organoleptic ballet on the tongue.

A Mes rate: Gravicask @ Planet Thanet. Looks a little watery for a start and didnt exactly fill me with confidence. My intial reservations were backed up by it just not sitting quite right in the nose or the flavour. Sweet butterscotch and watery. Not great at all.

Cask at The Crown before the Farnborough showdown. Opaque as liquorice against the sun, loose yellow dome of suds. Boiled cherry sweets in the aroma, some plastic. Stewed apple and burnt paper, cherry lollies. Lacks roast. Empty, yeasty and dull.

Cask (gravity dispense) at Ealing Beer Festival, July 2009. One of those beers that I could have sworn I had rated before but turns out I hadn’t. Very dark. Not much condition. Treacle toffee aroma. Dry mouthfeel. Some sharp, slightly lactic notes. Decent stuff.

Cask at Market Porter, Southwark, London. Near black with a leathery liquorice aroma. Didn’t like the taste, which included apple juice, blackcurrant and other not very good things.

Cask at Peterborough beer fest. Alround rating: Very roasty character, honety, dycetyl, bitter, cola. Not a hottie.

BeerViking (1055) - Brentford, Greater London, ENGLAND - AUG 16, 2008
UPDATED: JUL 29, 2010 Cask at the Magpie & Crown, Brentford, 16/Aug/08. Reddish-black, with a tawny head. Fruity (apricot?) aroma, sweet and roast malt flavours on the tongue, but with an unpleasing cardboardiness. The finish is bitter but still with that cardboard taste. Something’s not right here, methinks... Second time around was much better. Green apples, a little floral, some alcohol, a little wine on the nose, body is initially thin then thickens up, with oak and wine notes, plus dry liquorice and a slight lactic tartness.

Cask RA. Dark brown. Coffee and chocolate aromas. Sweet and soft taste. Not very stong maltiness. Available bitterness in the end.

On gravity at the Bristol Beer Festival 14/3/08. Near black with a slight tan head. Light aromas of chocolate and roast malt. Easy drinking with a touch of fruit and a tobacco finish. Ok.

Cask at Kitty’s, Helsinki. Black with peige head. Sweetish, malty and roasty aroma with notes of coffee, chocolate, leather, fruity hops and toffee. Rich bittersweet and roasty flavor with coffee, biscuity maltiness, salty licorice and hint of ash. This pint was served too cold but was otherwise in excellent condition. Very balanced and moreish!

UPDATED: JUN 25, 2007 Cask (One Pint, Helsinki, Porter and Stout days 2007). Sharp gingery bitterness on the nose. Huge when it hits the mouth, and lasts forever. Ginger and grapefruit bitterness, ends with a full malty taste.

Cask gravity at Planet Thanet BF 2007. Black colour with ruby edges, disappearing head. Thinnish aroma. Not a lot of intense flavours. Some roasted malts, but just a very easy drinking dark beer.
