argo0 (6231), Washington DC, USA Jul 23, 2007 (22oz bottle) Beige head with nice lacing atop clear copper/brown body. Aroma is medium sweet, chocolate, some caramel, faint anise. Taste is medium sweet, caramel, some chocolate, light earthy, sourness. Light-medium body. muzzlehatch (4424), Burlington, Vermont, USA May 27, 2005 22 oz bottle shared with the Master of Disaster, ClarkVV at his parents’ palatial chalet in Belfast Maine. Light elm-walnut, hazy and bottle-conditioned, bit of head retention...strong hazelnuts in the lovely nose, vanilla and an oaky backdrop, rather dry...nutty-earthy-cidery-vinegary textures on the tongue are really interesting, but alas it falls apart in the watery finish. Still, more interesting than most in this tasting. MartinT (4377), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jan 25, 2006 Any first impressions?
-A civilized, creamy head rests over an ochre-brown shade.
-Mild chestnuts and hop resins characterize the aroma.
-Orange pulp fruitiness and wooden dryness dominate this strangely hoppy brown ale.
-Carbonation is pretty comforting, but exposes the malt’s fragility.
What if you dig deeper?
-Aftertaste is very mellow, barely only a little citrus resurgence.
-The malt structure and extraction are a little disappointing, offering little to no flavors.
-The fruitiness keeps it quenching.
-An okay bitter maybe, but certainly no brown ale.
Bottle; no date. Tmoney99 (3650), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Jun 8, 2008 Bottle shared by shigadeyo. Poured a clear dark brown color with a large off-white frothy head that diminished slowly with good lacing. Medium toasted nutty malty aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Medium toasted sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of average duration. Interesting label. ClarkVV (3547), Allston, Massachusetts, USA May 30, 2005 2005 bomber shared with Muzzlehatch on 5/22/2005. Layered maple brown to blood orange color, with a yellow bottom. Off white head is well-retained, some lacing. Nose is dry/astringent, tree bark, woodiness, earth, diacetyl. . you know, the whole, "I was walking through the woods with a bottle of cider vinegar in one hand and some walnut paste in the other when I slipped and fell in to a patch of thick soil and mushrooms." sort of thing. Good malt extraction again. Too much cider/rubber. Bottle conditioned, medium-full body, easygoing mouthfeel. Lightly acidic on end.
