COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The cantankerous Old Bat Rastard, weary and soured from a prolonged slumber in a lactobacillus inoculated oaken cask, emerges renewed but not rejuvenated. A final homage to another passing winter beer season, Barrel Aged Old Bat Rastard can be savored immediately, or aged to allow the beer to take its natural course.

(22oz bottle, No. 26, courtesy of jjfoodie) Pours a cloudy amber body with a medium beige head. Aroma of caramel, cherry, citrus, raisins, and oak. Flavor of caramel, cocoa, cherry, brown sugar, raisins, roasted malt, and herbs with a somewhat dry finish.

22 oz bottle courtesy of axtdelivery. Thanks! Pours a rich ruby brown hue, glowing deep red elements with just a touch of haze, dark middle, and ominous reddish wine glow throughout. A frothy bigger tannish or light brown head that cakes larger, sticks around well. Aromas are an offering of sour cherries and balsamic, leather and toast, sweeter toffee, vanilla tannins and oak. Toffee and biscuits, touches of spice, as a fruity melange and wild yeast kicks it’s heels in, dry and bretty, cobwebs and red sour cherries and touches of crab apple, apples. Initial is medium or fuller bodied, offering sweet toffee and toast, caramel and biscuits. Wet barrel, oak, and touches of sour cherries, dry funky brett, some gentle leather. More sweetness than the nose let on as a gentle wild yeast element grows slowly over the palate, still letting the base shine through with some stickiness. Oak, growing touches of sour cherries and crab apple, touch of lemon. Funky, sticky malts, some gentle spirit, and a bit of heat into the backend. Gets a touch cough syrupy/medicinal a bit in the finish. Interesting. Not my personal taste though.

On tap and also from a cellared 750ml. Poured a still, sparkling cola-colored body with a hint of off white head. Slightly sweet/sour on the nose with some wood and red wine sourness. Taste is funk, some tartness, wet hair, medicinal and a long bitter finish. Slick mouthfeel with medium carbonation.

#13 2010 bottle compliments of Whitney. Very dark brown, cola-like pour with a big, foamy, tan head. Decent lacing. Head kills off some of the aroma but there is still a tart, cherry note similar to the non-BA version from the lacto. I pick a little smoke too. Compared to the non-Ba version, this taste closely resembles the aroma with sour notes. Very full mouthfeel too. Really well made old ale.

On tap at RealTail Festival at Freetail. Pours a dark amber with a medium frothy beige head that lasts awhile. The aroma is a smokey malt with light fruit. Medium mouthfeel with a sweet grape and white wine flavor and a nice smooth finish. Hides the alcohol well making it easy to drink. My favorite at the festival, an impressive old ale from Freetail.

On tap at RealTail at Freetail Brewing Co in San Antonio on July 17, 2010. Dark, dark brown color with a ruby tint. Great aroma, much like a winter warmer: spice and pine. Thin mouth feel, very soft and sour. I’m not sure barrel aging helped this beer, but rather made it a little worse. A good beer, though, with a warm finish. Malty, red, warm, and alcoholic, but sooo soft and savory.

I mean yeah, it’s infected. But I do love this beer. It a gentle tart, not the punch you in the mouth kind. The only off-putting flavor is some metal in the back of the mouth
