Legend has it that long ago, before the Aztecs, the god Quetz chose the Tadarida bat to care for and proliferate the fruit of Opuntia—the tuna, or prickly pear. Since then Fortuna Roja—the red-crested vanguard—has warded the little fruit from feasting predator insects and carried its pollen across countries and continents as the cacti have travelled from their source in ancient Tenochtitlan. This stunningly bright-hued beer is our homage to the efforts of the Fortuna Roja, its intense tartness curbed only by the fullness imparted by the tunas during its long torpor in oaken barrels. ¡VIVA FORTUNA ROJA! Ingredients: Pilsen & acidulated malts, raw wheat, flaked rye; Texas prickly pears; Perle hops; top-fermenting yeast; wild yeast & bacteria; natural, limestone-filtered, Edwards Aquifer H2O; love

Bottle shared by JCB. Cheers, Jason! Pours pink as shit, clear and not too fizzy. Wow, this is hugely watermelon, with perhaps some mild floral notes and even a hint of hibiscus. Not so sour, but lightly tart and sweet... refreshing. Strange, but good.

Bomber shared by JCB! Thanks Jason! Pours super bright pinkish red with a small white head. Nose shows lots of watermelon and acidity. Flavor is quite similar. I always wanted to try the RR Watermelon sour so maybe this is closest I will ever come. There may be no watermelon in this but it sure tasted that way. Solid little sour ale.

(22oz bomber thanks to swalden28) bright ruby pour with a ring of white bubbles. Funky nose, tangerine, and capers. Taste of mild salt, tangerine, cherry jolly rancher. Medium tartness, decent woody linger.

La fortuna. 22oz bottle thanks to Adam for sharing... Pours a semi- dirty yet vivid red grapefruit colored hue and topped wit a thin flimsy soapy white head... Aroma of sock stinky funk to be paired up with lighter raspberry seeds and soft watermelon. Quite nice and fruity... Flavors are crisp fruity and really tart and sour all around with a large tremendous lemon and lighter watermelon backbone and more so of that raspberry seediness. Soft to medium bodied with lively carbonation. Acidic to an extent but not overly or deliberately so. Carbonation is lively and body is light to medium. Enjoyed this one especially after some heavy stouts. 7/4/8/4/15

Bomber. Porued really pink, with not much head on it. The aroma was remarkably sour, with watermelon and vinegar leading (and drowning out everything else).. intriguing, but one-dimensional. The flavor found sour watermelon (which is certainly an interesting treatment for the fruit) throughout, with plenty of vinegar and oak amplifying.. dried out through the finish. Sour and puckering on the palate.. not my favorite of the evening, but it was aiight.

TheAlum (6942) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - AUG 14, 2011
22 oz bottle shared at the Pre-GTMW Tasting (Madison, WI). Pours a glowing pink ruby hue, a nice glow, well hazed with a small bubbly whitish head that dies to a small ring. Aromas are white wine and grapefruit, stronger, some fuzzy peach, touches of bread, fruity grapes. Nice and lively. A touch of melon. Initial is lighter bodied with a huge grapefruit, melon, and honeydew presence. Nice spritzy fruity presence, with white wine, white grape, tangerine, fruity essence and wet oak, touch of butter. Really nice, sweet and fruity, good healthy sourness and oak, but nothing ranging into acidic, more fruity overall. Sour watermelon, but fruity not artificial. Sour on it’s own merits, not acidic, fruity dominance with a big white wine presence. Pretty good, better than Ananke but that same barrel presence in aroma that I think is drop dead on. Really nice.

Bottle shared by TheAlum at the pre-GTMW 2011 tasting, pours a bright pink with a thin head, the aroma is pretty sweet actually with a little kick of funk, the flavor is pretty much straight forward with the watermelon and a little bit of funk in the finish, interesting brew.

8/12/11. Goofy pink pour. Funky, almost cheesy, woody aroma. The flavor is lots of watermelon with big sour and lingering vanilla. Nice!

Bottle. Clear pale watermelon jolly rancher color pour with a fleeting white head. Aromas of barnyard and ass. A little watery with fantastic funk, watermelon jolly rancher, and strawberry flavors. Light and refreshing. A great job by the kids from San Antonio..

Bottle... This beer rocks!… Lightly hazy, electric rose ale with a small, fizzy, white head. The nose is both fruity, acidic and funky – horse blanket, cherries and strawberries. Light to medium-bodied with intermediate carbonation. The flavor is sour and very sessionable. Fruity and nicely acidic – watermelon Jolly Rancher comes to mind. Finishes very tart, fruity, and then mildly dry. World class bottle of beer split with me by 50belair. Thanks, Matt!
