9.1% ABV, 50 IBU A growing South Texas tradition, La Muerta is brewed each year for DŪa de los Muertos in honor of our departed friends and family. A big, lush Imperial Stout, La Muerta is full of roast, smoke and chocolate flavors from an array of specialty malts that go into this garnetblack ale. If you are holding this bottle, it means either you (or someone you know with a kind heart) boldly stood in line for hours on the first Saturday of November. Karma rewards those who give selflessly, so share with your closest compadres or a new friend. La Muerta will age wonderfully for years to come Ė we recommend enjoying one now and save some for the future, if you can. °Salud!

Didnít really read up on this beer much before trying it. Didnít realize it was a smokey beer. 2013 Bottle. Deep black pour with a beautiful dark brown head. Aroma is of a very roasty smoke. Taste is smoke up front that seemed quite over powering, but actually subsides as you let the beer sit and warm up. Almost has a little bitterness to it. Over all itís a pretty good beer. Iím not much of a fan of smoked beers however, luckily this one isnít over smoked. Still, I almost feel like it could be an even better beer without the smoke.

Bottle thanks to mora2000..Pour is dark black with a thin head..Nose is chocolate powder, caramel, cola, roast..Taste is light, cola, spice, chocolate, nutty, light roast and smoke..Pretty disappointed..I would drink this pretty quick as all their beers get infected.

22 oz. bottle, sent from mista (thanks a lot, Geoff), pours black with small tan head. Nose brings out smoky notes, meat and a touch of roast. Flavour brings loads of smoked notes, but not really in a pleasant way, like an ashtray instead. Some hints of oxidation as well. Not good at all. Bleh. Couldnít finish my glass.

22 oz bottle. From a trade with Rosebud butternuts. Thanks a lot!
Black colour with a small tan head. Roasted malt, mild lactic acid and mild sweetness in the aroma. Berries, mild bitterness, mild sourness, roasted malt and mild smokiness in the flavour.

650 ml bottle, thanks rosenbergh. Pours a black colour with a beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, peppery spiciness, smoke and earthiness. Flavour of roasted malts, smoky, pepper, salt, potato, licorice and chocolate. Full bodied, oily mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Rich and tasty.

65 cl bottle.
Pours jet black color with a small beige head. Aroma is quite woody and malty, some licorice and chocolate also, faint spicy notes too. Flavor of burnt malts, chocolate, vanilla and mild salty licorice. Smooth and creamy palate with a malty finish. Quite nice and tasty.

65 cl bottle @ Tampella
Aroma is odd with cocoa notes, some soy sauce and peppery (chili?) spices. Flavour has cocoa, smoky notes & chili (chipotle?). Also some soy sauce and licorice. Finishes with moldy cellar tones that do grow stronger towards the end of the glass. Feels a bit watery and too salty, but decent anyway.

650ml bottle, thanks rosenbergh

Pours pitch black with a brown head. Aroma of spices, roastiness, dark chocolate and hints of ash. Taste is smooth, slightly smoked and roasty with hints of ash, dark chocolate and spices. Finish is warming, spicy, touches of mold cellar and a bit stingy with hints of smoked roastiness and dark chocolate. Okay, a bit untypically spiced imperial stout.

2012 edition. Thin pour for an imperial but black with no head. Lots of roast smoky malt aroma, coffee, burnt coffee, dark cherries. Taste is a nice mix of light coffee, roast malt, soy, cherries, and a nuttiness. Enjoyed it quite a lot.

Itís been the first day of the year (since summerís end at least) that itís gotten into the thirties, good time for an imperial stout. Pretty good looking beer, black with a nice foamy diesel head and sticky lacing. Aroma and flavor: very different from your typical American double. A pretty good nose and great taste, roasty, chocolate, coffee, burnt, dark and mid fruits, specifically perhaps a little Brachís chocolate covered cherries. Roasty and burnt flavors come through more as it warms. Hard to believe the ABV is so high. Drinks like itís 7%. Sweetish finish, but not overly so, with just a touch of chocolatey dry cocoa. Would like to try the barrel aged version, this one would be well suited for the barrel. Since I think I can still get some more of these, Iíll grab a few bottles and age some. I suspect it will be quite tasty aged, although itís quite tasty in this fresh bottle too. Freetail has been just wonderful since I discovered them. Theyíre friendly to homebrewers, and students too. Their beers are delicious, tho if they had a signature, Iíd probably say it was their witbiers (so amazing!). Either way, Freetail rocks. And youíll likely never hear the ENTIRE ALBUM of Mars Volta, "De-loused in the Comatorium" in any other bar, ever! Cheers for that, and for the tasty beer!
