3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 thirdeye11 (4093) - Dallas, USA - JUL 26, 2010
(Draught at Realtail festival at Freetail) clear deep copper with no bubbles. Nose of sweet caramel, grapefruit in the background. Taste is toasty, caramel, sweet, citrus oils. Body is medium thick, sweet citrusy finish. Reminds me of a barleywine more than a double IPA.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 BarZigKin (510) - San Antonio, Texas, USA - OCT 21, 2010
On tap at RealTail (still). Poured and imposing deep amber/orange body with some head and sticky lacing. Aromas of piney hops, caramel and ripe peaches/apricots (very nice). Flavors of medium sweetness, caramel/toffee, piney hops and some apricot. Soft carbonation and medium mouthfeel. This is a good DIPA and could be a very good barleywine. Freetail should do more high ABV beers.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Mora2000 (2966) - Dallas, Texas, USA - JUL 18, 2010
Sampled at the Freetail and Real Ale barrel-aged festival.
The beer pours a clear amber color with a white head. The aroma is caramel malt with some toffee and pine notes. The beer smells much more like a barleywine than a double IPA. The flavor is also similar to a barleywine. I get a lot of sweet caramel with some orange citrus notes. There is not too much bitterness, making the beer very sweet. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Not really a DIPA, but still a good beer.
3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 djd07 (1727) - Houston, Texas, USA - JUL 18, 2010
On tap at RealTail Festival at Freetail. Pours a clear amber with a small whtie head that diminishes quickly to nothing. The aroma is grapefruit and citrus. Thin mouthfeel with a light hop and caramel with honey and a nice light bitter finish. Very smooth and easy to drink hiding the alcohol well, a very good IIPA from Freetail.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 DarkBeerChick (155) - San Antonio, Texas, USA - JUL 18, 2010
On tap at Freetail. Reddish copper color with no head. Aroma is fruity, tangy and candy-like (YUM). Starts sweet and a little tangy with hints of fruit/cherries and a bitter finish. Reminds me more of a barley wine than an IPA.
3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Nellie (312) - Dallas, Texas, USA - JUL 17, 2010
Not bad for an IPA. Chad says it’s faded. That might be why I like it. Lots of caramel. I’d like to see what it taste like in a few months.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 corby112 (1904) - philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 7, 2010
Served on tap at the brewpub in San Antonio.
Pours a very cloudy dark golden orange color with golden yellowish orange hues when held to a light source and a one finger frothy white head that quickly fades into a lasting ring. Minimal spots of lacing left behind.
Dry earthy pine aroma with subtle citrus notes. Prominent malt backbone with hints of caramel and biscuit. Piney but not as hoppy as I expected with hints of tangerine and orange peel.
Medium bodied with a strong earthy hop presence up front that is pretty dry but again, the malt backbone is way too strong overpowering the hops. It’s decent;y balanced but I wish the hops were more prominent and that the beer was a bit more dry. Slightly bitter finish.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 ansermadide (865) - Kyle, Texas, USA - MAY 23, 2010
Wow, this has to be one of my favorite beers fdrom Freetail. Good job, huys. Reddish-orange in color with an off-white head. Aroma of hops and caramel. Very sweet, and easy to see how it could be even better with just a little more hops and gravity. With a little more of both this would be out of this world, in palate and finish. If they were going for a Harpoon Leviathan-like brew, they got really close, but it’s even more grainy (which I like). Even still, this was good enough for me to give it a 3.7 overall. Good job, guys. Bring us more beers like this one!
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 travita (2650) - Frisco, Texas, USA - MAY 13, 2010
On tap at the brewpub. The look is copper in color with a light beige colored head. The smell is caramel, sweet, alcohol, hops, pine, and fruits. The taste is very sweet, alcohol, lots and lots of fruit character, and caramel.
