And lo, before the brewers of Freetail stood two freshly emptied Port barrels, calling to be filled and their potential realized. “To ze lab!” proclaimed staff Astrophysicist Dr. Klaus von Brandenburgen. For hours the brew team and Klaus brainstormed before it dawned on them that Klaus actually knows little to nothing about recipe formulation. “Das Leben ist wie ein Kinderhemd--kurz und beschissen. I am physicist,” said Klaus as he walked away. Left to their own devices, the brew team developed Double Red Rooster, which eventually went into barrels and transformed into this tawny, rich brew with hints of tartness. Es ist noch nicht aller Tage Abend. Ingredients: 2-Row, crystal, melanoidin, special B, chocolate and honey malts; peak alpha hops; top-fermenting yeast; natural, limestone-filtered, Edwards Aquifer H2O; last-minute inspiration.

(draught) cloudy brown, medium tab head with fine bubbles. Nose of tart cranberry and other berries, cream, wet wood. Taste of tart cranberry, light raisin/fig, complex and tart. Medium body, tart linger, nice carbonation level.

On draft for GABF 2012. Pours a dark brown color with red highlights and an off-white head. Nose is cherry, oak, tartness, red grapes, and vinous fruit. Flavor is similar: malt, vinous tartness, oak, cherries, and red grapes. Light to medium in body and very nice overall.

On tap at RealTail 2012. Pours a cloudy amber with a small creamy beige head leaving sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is vinegar sour fruit and oak. Thin mouthfeel with a strong tart and light malt and funk. Easy to drink hiding alcohol well, a very good sour ale from Freetail.

Bottle: Poured a deep red/dark burgundy color ale with a average size foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma consists of oak and vinous notes with light acidic notes. Taste is a nice mix between some port notes with light woody notes and some vinous notes. Acidity level is quite balanced with a nice level of tart notes. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Nice sour ale with good overall balance.

22oz bottle, thanks Huhzubendah. Medium beige head atop crystal clear dark brown/garnet body. Aroma is moderately sweet, Brett, fairly sour, some lemon/orange, wood. Taste is moderately sweet, Brett, some lemon, light wood. Medium body, low carbonation, some acidity.

651mL thanks to Huhzubendah. Pours a clear, deep cola ruby. Weak, tan foam. Nose is oud bruin, chocolate, red wine, oak, savory smoked tomato, black pepper/Shiraz. Taste is spicy, lactic, peppery red wine, oak. Palate is lactic, citric, lime. I’m a sucker for oud bruin, my favorite style.

Bottle shared at Dark Lord Day (Munster, IN). Pours a deep brown ruby pour, great hazy dark body, some brown ruby glow on the edges. Frothy tannish head atop dies to a firm film, laces ok. Aromas are sour fruit, some cherries, some apples, oak and port barrel. Distinct red wine character with some vanilla, balsamic and cherries. A touch of biscuit. Lactic acidity. Initial is medium bodied, a bit more subtle than the powerful nose. Balsamic and cherries, red wine and oak, some biscuit and lactic acidity. Cherries, balsamic, vinegar. Middle is a bit more mellow, nice sourness and cherries, red wine, some biscuit and brown malts. Wet oak, balsamic and gentle carmelization. Backend is dry and sour, nice barrel, red wine and cherries. Finish is a touch carmelized, balsamic, oaky. This beer reallt settles down. A bit of a bigger body but I think the flavors are nice (though much more tame than the nose let on), well integrated. Nice sourness, cherries, and wine/oak character. Pretty nice. Probably not for everyone.

Bottle at Armin’s, courtesy of Dave. Thanks Man!!! Pour is deep brown with a slight red tint and a brown head; decent lacing. Sweet tarty, green apples, pears, light funk, urine, citrus, lemon peel, and biscuity aroma. Taste is dark fruity, grapey, grapefruit, plums, prunes, raspberries, blackberries, somewhat waxy, funky, and tangy witha big sour finish. Medium mouthfeel with high carbonation. Nice sour!

Tap flight at the brewery. Brown colored pour with a red hue and a medium lacing white head. Aroma of lightly aged balsamic vinegar and red wine vinegar. Taste is slightly sour but not at all funky or overpowering. Reminiscent of a less sweet Duchesse De Bourgone. Clean finish. A refreshing sour and good for noobs to the style. Bartender says this must have mellowed because it was really sour a month and a half ago. Well done.
