3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a nice amber to copper color, mostly clear, with a creamy head that left about a 1/4" sheet of dense foam capped on top the whole way down, leaving sheets of nice sticky resinous lacing.
The aroma doesnít blow me out of the water, by any means. Itís somewhat subdued, but I get Cara-Munich malt first, then some herbal, earthy hops.
Flavors much follow the aroma, but they stand out more, and leave me wondering why I donít make it out to freetail more often! The Cara-Munich and aromatic malts (along with whatever crystal malts they used) make a great base, and an unusual one for an IPA. I like the innovation! Itís well hopped, but balanced very well with the moderate ABV and bold malty backbone. Thereís a little citrus, but I am getting mostly heavily earthy and lightly floral or grassy hop flavors.
This IPA is very unusual, and very likeable. Just donít expect to be getting a standard west coast 47 lbs of hops per five gallons type of IPA. This beer is well crafted and delicious, but itís not Pliny the Younger or Heady Topper.
When I popped the bottle and had my first sip (before I looked it up) I thought it was going to be an English type IPA. Well, I was wrong on that one. But the fact that this beer is classified as an "American IPA," along with such a huge and highly diverse group of other beers, says to me that this category may be too broad. Just a few ticks lower on the ABV and Iíd think it was getting into "session IPA" territory (but nowadays, thatís practically an inflammatory statement, and is likely to initiate a raging discussion about the definition of session beer, session IPA, and who knows what else).
Overall: Freetail is a great brewery, and this is a very tasty beer. Itís not going to impress west-coast uber-hopheads that much, because itís more of a reasonable, drinkable IPA (the horror!), than an in-your-face, over the top, high ABV, massively hopped (to near the point of over-hopping) double IPA. I donít think that way-over-the-top was what Freetail intended, and I doubt whether the double-IPA as the "gold standard" craft beer drinker was their target here anyway. I suspect their assistant brewer just knew this recipe would make a great beer, so they brewed it, and damn the classifications or ratings.
Cheers to Freetail brewery!

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at brewpub. Pours a cloudy amber with a small frothy white head. The aroma is a strong citrus hop and resin. Medium mouthfeel with a dry hop bite and light caramel flavor. Easy to drink, a good IPA from Freetail.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tap flight at the brewery. Amber color brew with an excellently laced thin white head. Aroma is fossil fuel and unripe tropical fruits. Very bitter hop flavor with a little fuel and a nutty finish. Medium palate.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
This is a bright-orangey IPA with a bright-white head and minimal, but cool-looking lacing.
The aroma is soft and fruity, with a fruity hop presence and a soft, almost moldy bread
malt sweetness. Freetail touts it as west coast, but I think itís less acute, less piney, and
more soft - without the body odor-like dankness that comes from some northwest coast
beers. It has a really nice tropucal, caramelly sweet hop flavor with a modest body. Very
nice... It has the heft of an ale fermented with Pacific Ale yeast... itís very well balanced
and great! What a soft IPA - and yet it offers everything an IP should, minus intense
bitterness in the finish. Great job, guys. Not fantastic, but modest and yet impressive.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tap at brewpub. Dark gold and a bit hazy. Mild nose that is more malty than hoppy. Taste is dominated by the maltiness with the hops adding a nice background profile. A bit of a different take on an ipa but this one works fairly well.
