3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle brought at Rudat in Dortmund poured into nosing glass. Quickly vanishing white head and hazy yellow color. Fruity nose and Kind of altbier style nose. Cardboard and stuffed attic hints. The pear however remains mainly in the back. Taste however is definitly very dominant. Fruity sweetish and Kind of sour as well. Good balenced and dryer finish makes this very round... I like it!

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Maker: Freigeist Bierkultur, Stolberg, Germany. ***
Beer: Freigeist Abraxas (bottled, unfitlered, 500ml) ***
Style: Gose/Lichtenhainer ***
ALC.VOL.: 3.9% ***
"Inspired by an old German style called Lichtenhainer, so it’s a low-alcohol(3,8%), top-fermented smoked beer with lactic sourness." [brewery note] ***
Colour: Hazy orange, small creamy head. ***
Nose: Smoke (or smoked ham), oranges, yeast. ***
Texture: Medium body, quite watery. Mild carbonation. ***
Taste: Sour lemon mixed with smoked malts, yeast, lactose. The typically pervasive citrus sourness of the gose style is somewhat moderated by the light smoke (nowhere near as smoky as a Bamberg smoked beer!). Still the overall impression towards the middle is smoky, dry and sour. Lemony finish and aftertaste of medium length. ***
Impressions: A mix of smoked malts with the super-citric gose style. Needs some time to adjust to. Those who dislike either of the two styles (or both) need not bother. But it’s an interesting, altogether different brew. The name of the beer, "Abraxas", refers to a Faust ballet scenario devised by poet Heinrich Heine for German composer Werner Egk (Heine’s profile is on the label)

Bottle. Poured a cloudy orange amber color with an average white head that mostly lasted with very good lacing. Good aroma of yeast, smoke and cheese. Medium to abundant body with smooth texture and soft carbonation. Good smoke flavor with a complex sweet finish of medium to long duration. Interesting complex brew.

Newbie to Lichtenhainer style Weisse. Freigeist finds harmony with sour and smoke in this light bodied golden brew. Picked up on a whim at State Line Liquors.
