4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 24, 2012
March 2010: Dark green 0.75 litre, capped sparkling wine shaped bottle, given to me by one of the brewers, Sebastian, while at the Pre-ZBF 2010.
Murky, dull orange colour, an old gold look, white collar and a wispy covering. I poured the beer into a ’Kasteel’ chalice three times, my Berlinerweiss glass was at home!
Apples, sour cooking apples smell, as the beer warmed a lightly smoked ham aroma started to appear and replace the cooking apples.
Dry, semi-sour, citrus tartness, grapefruit more than lemon sour, a pleasant acidic sharpness and interesting on the tongue.
An outside sunny day beer, not a winters evening robust warmer. A very good Berlinerweiss type beer, I’d forgotten how good they could be.
The 3.8% ABV was a shock, felt a lot stronger and fuller than that, very drinkable.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Grima (1573) - Saarburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, GERMANY - MAR 7, 2012
The beer in the glass is golden yellow, light brown, with a high creamy white head. It smells pleasantly grainy-malty, slightly yeasty and sour, with a distinct smoky taste. Starts very tart, but still quite pleasant. The smoke and ham flavor comes through very good. The middle part shows dominant sourish, slightly smoky and very grainy and yeasty. Goes into a sour-yeasty finish with lots of smoke.
3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Idiosynkrasie (542) - Bielefeld, GERMANY - FEB 22, 2012
375ml bottle. Hazy pale golden colour with no head - just a thin white layer cultivates. Several aromas work together, giving the impression of an hotpot with a smoked meat "garnish". More analytical, the smoke note domains a sour note, both resting on a cooked vegetable basis. Taste is predominantly sour, also smokey in an integrated way, astonishingly strong for 3.8% abv. Very interesting, exceptional and not bad - but with the touch of "astonishing, what else counts as beer " and not one immediately calling for a second round.
1.7 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 omhper (15964) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - FEB 18, 2012
Bottled, at tasting at _angst_. Hazy pale golden, coarse head. Smoky rubber aroma. Appley sourness with dandelion and loads of rubber. Light bodied and rather harsh. Citric acid finish with some burning tires. So far my encounters with Freigeist has been all but pleasant - gimmicky flawed beers. Hope I’ve just been unlucky...
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 _angst_ (1021) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - FEB 13, 2012
375 ml bottle bought @ Bierkompass.de. Shared at epic tasting on February 11. Pours slightly hazy yellow with a white head that leaves some lacing while dissipating. Smell is tart, fruity and floral with unripe pears, dandelions, rubber, lemon juice, apples and hay. Taste is sour with rubber, pears, green apples and herbs. Weird and slightly artificial chemical taste. Mouthfeel is very sour, slightly watery and slightly dry. Finish is tart with dandelions and green apples.
