Inspired by an old German style called Lichtenhainer, so it’s a low-alcohol (3,8%), top-fermented smoked beer with lactic sourness.
Early batches were brewed at Braustelle, now mainly brewed in Eitting.

Bottle at Redlight Redlight. Pours a slightly hazy pale orange with a good amount of tight, white head that held about 30 seconds before fading into a thin collar. Good lacing. A weird kind of funk to the aroma of this beer, almost like a spoiled cheese. I also get some orangey citrus and dry grass. Taste is very similar. The citrus up front, the grass in the middle, and the bleu cheese funk throughout. Nice carbonation, medium to high; and a nice medium-light body.

I liked this way more than their spruce one. Smoky, sour, yeasty. Unusual but I dig it.

Bottle. Sweet light brown sugar and beechwood smoke aroma hazy orange amber under a white patch and collar. Flavour is not really lactic or sour, but sweet and with brethren sugar and slightly phenolic beechwood-smoked malt. Clean. Medium body, moderate to medium carbonation, slightly crisp.

The problem of living in Toronto is most German beers we get are industrial exports. But this beer throws that out the tired same-old-same-old out the window. Lichtenhainer, the almost white whale of forgotten beer curiosities! Pours uninspired in the glass. Nose is peat (brings to mind great scotches drunk) & pear. Very curious sipper: ash, sweet pear, slightly tart. Think a lightly smoked Berliner Weiss. Mrs Tiki steals a sip & says its like liquid meat (that’s a good thing, right) & then gets all fancy & Québécois & compares it to charcuterie (that’s French for smoked meat, right?). An enjoyable brew. And even more compelling is the rare opportunity to enjoy this mostly forgotten beer style. Final thought: reviewers below complaining that its smoked have to a) google the style or b) go back to their session ipa.

Pours hazy gold with an off white head.  Big smokey nose and flavour, with hints of fruit in the background. Decent beer, but a little too much smoke flavour for my liking.

It pours murky gold; the head is off white and foamy. The aroma has notes of: cereal, smoke, pears, and star anise. The taste is lightly sour that finishes dry and bitter; there are notes of: cereal, smoke, pears, and pepper. The palate is medium-light bodied with medium carbonation; it has a medium finish. Overall, it’s flavourful.

Bottle. Softly hazed honey hue with a fluffy white cap. Pretty spot-on example of the style: mild beechwood-smoked malt right next to sweet apple, fruity wheat and a mild lactic snap at the finish. Smoke lingers long after the swallow, but never gets to unpleasant levels. Tons of flavor (unique as it is) in a low-ABV package, too.

Pours a hazy golden yellow from the bottle with minimal head or lace. Aroma of slight lactic sour and big earth notes. Taste is a nice gose with just a hint of smoky earth. Soft carbonation, meh.

Bottle brought at Rudat in Dortmund poured into nosing glass. Quickly vanishing white head and hazy yellow color. Fruity nose and Kind of altbier style nose. Cardboard and stuffed attic hints. The pear however remains mainly in the back. Taste however is definitly very dominant. Fruity sweetish and Kind of sour as well. Good balenced and dryer finish makes this very round... I like it!

Slightly cloudy brown. Massive sweet smoke nose. Taste is sweet wood smoke, sour mash malts, tart finish with lingering smoke. Good but can only take so much.
