Like Freigeist Abraxas, it’s also inspired by the style Lichtenhainer, but this version is stronger (6% alc.) and contains more lactic sourness. Brewed until 2012 at Braustelle (375 ml bottle), from 2013 at Göller in Zeil (330 ml bottle).

Bottle. Poured a murky ruddy amber color with not much head. Aroma of smoke, peat, with hint of meat and wheat. Smoky and smooth; some sweetness and sour notes in the finish. Found it pretty darn easy to drink.

Bottle. Moderate light bread and grain for the malt, faint lemon peel for the hops, light dried leaves for the yeast, with just a hint of smokiness. Head is small, fizzy, white with some slippery lacing and is almost fully diminishing. Color is clear medium amber. Flavor starts slightly sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly acidic slightly bitter. Palate is light to medium, watery with a soft carbonation. Less tart than I expected, but this Lichtenhainer is crisp and smooth at the same time.

Backlog. Draft at Churchkey. Orange-gold with small offwhite head. Smoky, with citrus sweet malt. Some sour notes are present but in the background. Interesting.

Pint bottle, poured into a shaker pint at ~50 degrees F. Appearance: Pours a deeply cloudy straw gold, and forms virtually no head. What head does form is white bubbles, which vanish completely in short order. Smell: Deliciously smoky, all charred wood over a base of semi-sweet wheat malt and some vague hints of light fruit. Taste: Hardwood smoke and ash colors the entire tasting experience, overlaying the rest of the flavor profile with shades of fire and char. Beneath the smoke, a light wheat malt base forms a somewhat crackery-toasty backbone, amidst which notes of salt, white grape, pear, apple bark, and something akin to bell pepper swirl by. At the finish, the smoke recedes just enough to allow a brief burst of concentrated salt and black pepper through, ere settling into a wood smoke aftertaste. Mouthfeel: Just this side of completely flat, with an almost oily creamy weight that breaks down towards watery at the very end of each sip. Overall: A delightful smoked light wheat beer, with just a hint of mineral saltiness. I approve, and will repeat.

Quite interesting beer. In my experience there is no beer comparable in attributes. Aroma - is tart and full lactic barnyard sort of funk. The smoke doesn’t come through, not much anyway. Appearance - golden body with a white head that fades quickly into a thin ring. Taste - is weird in the most enjoyable way. There is a definite tang, not too sweet not too sour ~ but then there is a beechwood smoke that hangs around subtle but good. Palate - body is light, texture thin, carbonation is lively, the finish is tart and tangy. It is like drinking a fine light Lambic in a smokehouse. Most unusually pleasing.

Trübes gelborange mit durchschnittlicher Schaumkrone. Malzig, rauchig, etwas Speck, eine leichte Säure, sehr süffig.

Bottle. Pours a hazy golden beer with a small white head on top. Aroma has a big smoke note, slightly grainy and wheaty. Smoke overwhelms a bit, in a good way. Flavor is a bit weird with smokey notes, slighly sweet but also a bit bitter and citrussy, Has some banana sweetness in the start and finish. Decent amount of carbonation and a slightly yeasty presence in the mouthfeel. Cool beer for sure, fun to try.

500 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours hazy/cloudy golden orange color with a 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of lemon, apricot, pear, apple, light banana/clove, wood smoke, salt, wheat, cracker, toasted biscuit, herbal, grass, light pepper, and smoke/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of bready/smoked malt, earthy hops, and fruity/spicy yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon, apricot, pear, apple, light banana/clove, wood smoke, salt, wheat, cracker, toasted biscuit, herbal, grass, light pepper, and smoke/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/spicy bitterness and tangy wheat tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, apricot, pear, apple, light banana/clove, wood smoke, wheat, cracker, toasted biscuit, and herbal/smokey earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of bready/smoked malt, earthy hops, and fruity/spicy yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/tartness/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, and slightly saline mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice smoked wheat beer style. All around good robustness, complexity, and balance of bready/smoked malts, earthy hops, and fruity/spicy yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. This was not lactic sour at all as I would expect for the labeled style, but it is a very enjoyable offering as a smoked weizen style.
