Whole Foods, Bowery 50cl ($6): Pours a hazy orange with a small white head. Aroma is wheat malt, citrus, and a tiny bit of smoke. Taste is sweet and sour. Smokiness is a faint undertone, which hits at very certain points and appears in miniscule quantities in the aftertaste, especially if you exhale from your nose. Sourness is definitely there. This be amongst the more sour Berliners I have tried. Quite dope. Subtle. I wish it was a bit less sweat.

On tap at the Black Back when I stopped here with Max on the way to Hill Farmstead’s Harvest Festival. Pours a lightly hazed golden amber with a medium sized white head. Lots of smoke, phenolic yeast. Smooth, nice lactic sourness, and still some smoke. Super interesting. Smoky toast, lactic tartness. Neat. Easy drinking. Even after a whole glass of this, I’m still not sure if it works or not, or even if I liked it. But it’s definitely a neat beer.

on tap at blackback, waterbury. hazy pale golden with a frothy white head, good retention, some lacing. wheat, breadied malts, yeast and bananas, very hint of smoke and sweetness, medium acidity - some lactic notes. average carbonation - some fizz, light to medium body, nice citrusy-lightly smoked finish, dry tartness. really enjoyed this one!
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 ThirstyBird (418) - Düsseldorf, GERMANY - SEP 22, 2012
33ML bottle pours a hazy dull yellow orange with a smallish off white head. Smell is Mild smokey peat, a little lemony citrus. Taste Follows nose with some tartness from the citrus, some earthy notes. Light body active yet soft carbonation...quite nice. Overall an interesting hybrid though I would personally prefer a little more tart citrus and a bit less of the smoke then I think it could be magical!

Draft at City Tap House in Philadelphia, PA
Pours a slightly cloudy, pale golden orange color with a one finger white foam head that quickly fades into a thin ring. Not much in the way of lacing.
Earthy aroma that’s dominated by a strong lactic funk presence. Really cheesy with subtle citrus, light fruit and pale malt notes underneath. Kind of bland and I’m not picking up on the smokiness or much of anything else.
Fuller bodied than expected but even more one dimensional than the nose suggests. Only sligtly sour with an overwhelming lactic funk presence. Very funk and cheesy with an unpleasant dairy flavor that overpowers the mustiness, light fruit and other notes. Again, I’m not picking up any smokiness, wheat or citrus. Just all lactic funk.

Bottle. Pours a hazy golden color with monstrous foamy white head - excellent retention. SLightly smoky but not much else in the nose. Mouth is smoky and tart up front then yeasty with a bready finish, with fading smoke. Decent.

Draft @ Novare Res Bier Café. On 1 Sept 2012. Smoked malt nose with light notes of sour lemon’s. Taste is sour lemon upfront and smoked malt in the finish. Wheat sweetness with light lactic acid. Tastes like it was in oak for a while. I’m not a fan of smoked beers but I’m glad the sourness balances it out. Very interesting and a different take on a sour.
