3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Grima (1864) - Saarburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, - JAN 8, 2013The beer in the glass is amber-colored, very hazy, with flat fine head. It smells yeasty and fruity, grainy and slight smoky. Starts pleasantly smoky, subtly sweet and yeasty in the background, with a solid malt base. The middle part is subtly tart, again with a pleasant smoky flavor.. Goes into a fruity-sweet and subtly smoky finish with some yeast flavor!

Taste: very peated, smoky, bit sour, red berries, green banana peel, bit malty, some caramel, bitter touch, earthy. Aftertaste: sour touch, little hoppy, very smoky, leathery, dry.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20 Martinus (1795) - Nijmegen, NETHERLANDS - JAN 23, 2013
Slightly hazy amber colour, white head. Smoky aroma, caramel and malts. Quite smoky flavour, light sweet, ash, light fruit. Weird smoky finish, caramel and malts.
The last style to rate here on rb. Can’t say I am clear now on the difference between Scotch Ale and Scottisch Ale, but I’m not sure Freigeist made the most typical Scottisch Ale ever either. At least it is a start.
(From 33cL bottle @ RBBWG II, Wilrijk 2013. Courtesy of both tderoeck and 77ships. Thanks sirs!)
3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Travlr (7997) - Washington, Washington DC, USA - JAN 21, 2013
Bottles from tderoeck and 77ships, thank you gentlemen! Murky orange color, fluffy white head. Aroma is interesting floral perfume. Taste is smoky caramel.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 77ships (2162) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - JAN 20, 2013
Two bottles of this were present @ RBBWG 2013. One from tderoeck (thx!) & one from me. 33 cl. Neat label & name is more akin to what you would expect a malt liquor to be called. People wanted this one for the super-elusive Scottish Ale tick. I do find it hilarious that they wanted to get an idea of how a style should be done traditionally based on a Freigeist beer :) Pours hazy golden. Oh, smoked malts in the nose, even peated touch, smoke blended with sweet malts with quite a bit of fruits. Taste is smoked, peated, caramel, toffee, buried under a fruity sourness, lemon, touch children vitamins, quite similar streak to a completely different Freigeist beer I recently tried, similar infection? bitter & sour spices, some fruits. Interesting the added smoke & touch peat. Bit flatter. I dig this odd stuff.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 sebletitje (5420) - Enghien, BELGIUM - JAN 20, 2013
75cl bottle sample @ RBBWG 2013, courtesy of 77ships.
2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 Benzai (4362) - Oirschot, NETHERLANDS - JAN 19, 2013
Sampled from bottle @ RBBWG 2013. Opaque hazy orange color, just a slightly white head on top. Smell malts and smoke. Taste malts, smoke, fingerpaint I used in school as a kid, slight bitter hint. Don’t like it. Medium body and carbonation.
3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 turbothy (1007) - Bonn, GERMANY - JAN 10, 2013
Bottle, two months past BB date. Pours cloudy reddish amber with a very small head. Aroma is intensely smoky oak, flavour an overpowering, malty whiskey with only slight bitterness. Interesting and unbalanced.
