3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate chocolate, raspberry, roast, coffee, and a hint of smoke. It pours a dark brown with some orange highlights and a one finger khaki head that fades to a thin film. There is some very thin webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with a quick dose of moderate chocolate. There is a moderate-heavy light-moderately tart raspberry backbone here. The finish has light lemon, mild roast, coffee, and a touch of vanilla. Itís medium bodied with mild carbonation and a soft mouthfeel. Overall, I was a little skeptical of this since Iím not a fan of dark sours. I rarely think sour and roasty work well together. This is very good. Itís more tart than sour and the roastiness is pretty mild.

500ml bottle, from trade with Erzengel, many thanks! Pours dark with small tan head. Aroma bears raspberry syrup, some chocolate. Taste is sticky-thick bodied, veering towards cloying. Iím not too into fruit porters but thankfully the raspberry element is integrated well with cocoa, liquorice salt and roast with a light sour edge.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Coppers, Newcastle. Inky black with a thick head of tan foam. It has a tart, rich raspberry and chocolate flavour with liquorice, bitter, roasted notes and more sour raspberry on the finish. Excellent!

2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
The beer is a medium dark purplish red, not too dark to see through a bit. Fairly hazy. Pours nearly flat. Zero head, almost no bubbles even with a vigorous pour. I donít like to knock off points for appearance, but Iíll make an exception here. The aroma is raspberries and slightly spoiled and fairly mild milk chocolate. If that chocolate note was better and stronger, I think Iíd like this beer. As is, itís just off-putting. The sweet raspberries dominate and seem a bit fake and sweetener-ish. The taste does not help much. Itís sour, flat porter with some meh raspberry flavor and a twang of artificial-tasting sweetness. Some cola flavor. Just a touch of fruity roast. Maybe some smoke. The mouthfeel is limp and flat and really doesnít help. This bottle isnít super old and just isnít good. Hard to drink much.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
500 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big sour raspberry, red grape, dark fruit, milk chocolate, cocoa, toasted dark bread, light licorice, sea salt, hay, straw, pepper, light red wine vinegar/funk, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/acidic yeast, dark/roasted malt, and raspberry fruit notes; with good strength. Taste of big sour raspberry, red grape, dark fruit, milk chocolate, cocoa, toasted dark bread, light licorice, sea salt, hay, straw, pepper, light red wine vinegar/funk, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Good amount of fruity/tannic tartness, roast bitterness, and yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour raspberry, red grape, dark fruit, milk chocolate, cocoa, toasted dark bread, light licorice, sea salt, hay, straw, pepper, light red wine vinegar/funk, and yeast/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Good balance, robustness, and complexity of fruity/acidic yeast, dark/roasted malt, and raspberry fruit flavors; with a solid tart/bitter/spiciness balance and some light-moderate bitter astringency lingering after the finish. Moderate dryness from acidity/spiciness as well. Light-medium carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately acidic/sticky, and fairly creamy mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a pretty good fruited sour porter style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, dark/roasted malt, and raspberry fruit flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink even with the bitter astringency. A fairly enjoyable offering; the cherry version was much better and more balanced.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
This is a little disappointing as the cherry version of this was so good and this was rated better, besides my personal preference of generally liking raspberries more than cherries. Here the raspberries dominate the aroma, can barely pick up the malt. Flavorwise, the sharp tartness clashes with the raspberries and the malt is broken vehicle for it with only a hint of balancing malt to round.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
500 ml bottle, no dating on the bottle that I could find. Served in a Unibroue tulip, the beer pours dark brown with about a half inch cola-like light tan head that fizzled away quickly. Not much of any lacing, either. The brew smells like raspberry jam/syrup, dark fruit, roasted malt and tootsie roll chocolates. It tastes like tart dark fruit, sweet and tart raspberries, and tootsie rolls. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, itís a bit slick and has a low amount of carbonation. Seems a bit watery at times. Itís not bad tasting, but I think this could be a lot better beer overall. The aroma and taste isnít bad, but the body/mouthfeel isnít there, it reminds me of a brew thatís just sat around for too long. Itís worth a try once, but if another batch of this is made in the future Iíll have to try it again if they ever start bottle dating (or at least putting a best by date on the bottle/label).
