Thanks to a generous trader for sending this a while ago. The last vestiges of winter felt like the right time to crack it open. I’ll have to get the bourbon barrel release next so I can see how it compares. This middle of the pack strong ale demonstrates why not all breweries are created equal.

Aroma / Appearance - A deep velvet black pour flows downwards like melted chocolate. Sandy head filters the scents of melted baker’s chocolate, malt, and semisweet cookies.

Flavor / Palate - The chewy mouthfeel of Hershey’s kisses, black coffee, and dried figs warms the palate. A full bodied finish bursts into a soft bitterness. The well done winter warmer has held up well although I doubt this is one to age for a very long time.

Could easily pass as a sweet/milk stout. Deep black with a lasting tan head. Milkshake-like texture is smooth, creamy and heavy, with only a mild carbonation. Lots of residual sweetness makes it more of a dessert beer than a winter warmer, but it’s a rich and tasty sweetness. Big notes of milk chocolate and sweetened espresso with cream. Soft carafa malts come through nicely. Earthy, herbal and spicy hops are very mellow; 47 IBUs struggle under the weight of all the malts. Overall, it’s a tasty beer; it’s just a little too sweet for me.

Can from trade with michaelinwa. Pours a very dark brown color with a small like that lingers a bit. Aromas are cocoa, chocolate, light roast, and grass. Taste is great. Chocolaty, roasty, and slightly hoppy with some spicy and grassy hops. Almost like a Black IPA or a hoppy black lager. Finish is smooth and crisp. Mouthfeel is a bit thin but makes it easy to drink. Really good beer. Thanks Mike!

Bottle: Deep brown and auburn color with a small creamy beige head. Nose is sweet of caramel malts and light florals. Flavor is sweet and robust with caramel, toffee, faded citrus hops, and chocolate. I let this sit in the cellar longer than I wanted to, but in it’s (presumably) more mellow state the flavor still comes through strong and well balanced.

Tap at pike. Pours brown with a light tan head. Notes of pine and dark roasted malts in the flavor and aroma. Notes of spice. Was more like a winter warmer + stout. Clean medium bodied palate.

Bottle: black with a reddish hue and virtually no head. Roasted, hoppy aroma with notes of caramel, roasted malts and flowery hops. Flavor is sweet with a long and heavy bitter finish and notes of licorice. And a herbal touch. A little alchol burns through. Soft carbonation, full body.

Excellent brew!! Bottle was room temp when I poured it with a thick, foamy, tan head that lasts a while and plenty of lace. Color is a clear, dark mahoganey with lots of tiny bubble trails. Aroma is malt, roast, fruit, hop. Flavor’s like nose, plus brandy and is bitter up front with slight sweetness way in back and good carbonic tang to balance. Full body with a few high points and great carbonation. Finish is a tad long and boozy. Very drinkable.

Pour from a can. Nice dark pour with a tan head and lots of lacing. Nice roasted malt nose with hints of Belgian yeast by products. Really nice taste - slight heat on the finish with a touch of hops and spice.

Poured from a 22 ounce bomber. Chocolate, coffee, nutty, earthy. A nice malty beer for a cold winter night.

Deep brown with a dark head. Roasted, cocoa, a bit of earthy spiced hops. Boldly flavored. Medium to full body. Finish is roast, chocolate, and background spice- lasting. Very enjoyable American Strong. Veers to the malty side but with plenty of spicy hops to avoid being a sweet bomb. God stuff.
