Tap at Fremont, Seattle - 08/11/12. Very dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head that clears to the edge of the glass and forms a small film atop. Nose comprises dark fruits, toffee, a little spice, nutty tones, burnt caramelised sugars. Taste follows nose with hints of liqourice, dark fruits, touch of booze. Medium bodied with soft carbonation lending towards a bitter sweet finish. Not usually taken in by ’winter/xmas’ beers but this was half decent!

August maroon-amber body. Candi sugar and scotch malt backbone with notes of bubblegum in aroma and flavor. Reserved roastiness. Nice body, alcohol is completely masked. Good stuff.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of yespr/Ungstrup. Pours a dark brown with a vague orange hue and a small beige head. Quite some roast in the nose and a whiff of smoke as well. Medium body, very dry roast, some orange notes, ashy, smoky with quite some bittering hops. A solid stoutish offering. 200312

Draft at Tap House Bellevue. Pours a murky, nearly opaque dark brown with a loose and thin dark tan head. Brown bread, molasses, and ginger cookie on the nose. Creamy medium body with soft carb. Brown bread, molasses, and cookie dough on the mid palate. Mild sweet malty finish. Nice enough.

UPDATED: DEC 12, 2012 Pours about as dark as a stout, with a mild roasty malt aroma that is not impressive. The flavor is balanced, with the focus on mild roasted malt notes, slight complexity, and just enough hops. This is a solid beer, but probably falls behind Avery Old Jubilation in this style since it doesn’t manage to be quite as interesting. Ages and improves well, but I see no need to revisit this when there are couple others in the style that work better. Update 11/2012: sampled a bottle cellared for one year. Cellaring makes this a better beer as it takes much of the hop edge off, and brings up a sharper malt flavor. I definitely prefer this with some age on it. Will interesting to try a 2 year old sample next year.
