Draft at brewpub. Super dark mahogany brown with a small grayish head. Nose is very much roasted/toasted malt with nice chocolate, floral hops, earthy cinnamon spiciness and roasted chestnut. Also pick up some light banana esters as it warms. Nice tight carbonation an medium body feel. Kind of earthy and sweet up front with roasted nutty malt, banana and light cocoa. Some peppery and cinnamon spiciness throughout. Looking forward to trying the BA version.

Bottle thanks to Ben! Pours a clear dark brown with a gray head that dissipates completely. Aroma has a good amount of sweet dark grains with a bit of light spice and grains underlying. Flavor begins has an earthy grain backed by light sweet grains with a hint of light fruit.

Tap at Fremont, Seattle - 08/11/12. Very dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head that clears to the edge of the glass and forms a small film atop. Nose comprises dark fruits, toffee, a little spice, nutty tones, burnt caramelised sugars. Taste follows nose with hints of liqourice, dark fruits, touch of booze. Medium bodied with soft carbonation lending towards a bitter sweet finish. Not usually taken in by ’winter/xmas’ beers but this was half decent!

On draft in sandpoint, Idaho. Dark brown pour with creamy tan head. Moderate retention. Aroma is chocolate, roasted grains, toffee. Taste: toasty. Moderate bitterness (coffee grounds), light to moderate sweetness. Palate: moderate carbonation, medium body. Lightly bitter lingering finish. Overall: it's wild how different this is from the b-bomb. Coffee finish is pronounced. Definitely tasty, but mostly it makes me want to pick up another bottle of the b-bomb before they're gone for the season. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

August maroon-amber body. Candi sugar and scotch malt backbone with notes of bubblegum in aroma and flavor. Reserved roastiness. Nice body, alcohol is completely masked. Good stuff.

UPDATED: FEB 15, 2014 Pours about as dark as a stout, with a mild roasty malt aroma that is not impressive. The flavor is balanced, with the focus on mild roasted malt notes, slight complexity, and just enough hops. This is a solid beer, but probably falls behind Avery Old Jubilation in this style since it doesn’t manage to be quite as interesting. Ages and improves well, but I see no need to revisit this when there are couple others in the style that work better. Update 11/2012: sampled a bottle cellared for one year. Cellaring makes this a better beer as it takes much of the hop edge off, and brings up a sharper malt flavor. I definitely prefer this with some age on it. Will interesting to try a 2 year old sample next year. Update: February 2014. Two year old sample holds up very well, but can’t say it’s improving. But very tasty. Nice malt, with right amount of roasted notes and balancing bitterness. Loses some aroma. Will try another bottle at 3 years.
