Lovingly referred to by Fremonters as the B-BOMB, this bourbon barrel-aged edition of our winter ale has a warming spicy aroma and rich carmelly notes of bourbon, wood and vanilla added to dark roasty chocolatey malt flavors and subtle hopping.

2011, red waxed bottle, via trade. pours a deep, dark, chestnut brown (like a good winter ale should) with a creamy, light khaki head that has excellent retention. aroma is wonderful with big notes of candied nuts, pralines, coconut, and vanilla cake backed by subtle cocoa, toasted oak, bourbon, and dark fruits. flavor is delicious as well with smooth, rich bourbon, vanilla, oak, and dark malts up front backed by pralines, black cherries, walnuts, and earthy hops. palate is full bodied with smooth carbonation and a lingering, sweet, woody finish. overall, a great barrel aged winter ale.

August 5, 2015. Bottle, vintage 2014, @Sommarprovning, thanks for sharing!
Dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is caramel, bourbon, vanilla, charred oak, notes of milk chocolate, figs and notes of nuts and licorice. Taste is sweet, malty, slight boozy and some roasted bitter notes. Finish is sweet caramel, figs, vanilla, some bitter roasted notes, slight woody sharpness and warming bourbon. Medium to full bodied, oily texture, soft carbonation.
Nice, a bit hot with a slight sharp finish.

Bottle. Black with a medium khaki colored head that has fair retention. The aroma is big and bold with wood, a trace of spice, raisins, dates, plums and all manner of complex dark fruit. The taste is also wonderfully complex and features more dark fruit, cola, some whiskey, vanilla, oak, toffee, and dark fruits. The palate is full, smooth, a trace oily and very viscous. Finishes long and sweet. Overall: One of the best beers I’ve had in a long time. At $13.00 a bottle it is also a fair value for a big beer. This to me tastes like what Westy 12 would taste like if you aged it a bourbon barrel.

Saturday night bottle share. Can courtesy of Syndicate. As if Abominable wasn’t good enough, along come the BA variant. Extra smooth texture, hints of bourbon flash through the rich stout base. Nice well rounded brew made better with some bourbon barrel ageing.
