4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
2011, red waxed bottle, via trade. pours a deep, dark, chestnut brown (like a good winter ale should) with a creamy, light khaki head that has excellent retention. aroma is wonderful with big notes of candied nuts, pralines, coconut, and vanilla cake backed by subtle cocoa, toasted oak, bourbon, and dark fruits. flavor is delicious as well with smooth, rich bourbon, vanilla, oak, and dark malts up front backed by pralines, black cherries, walnuts, and earthy hops. palate is full bodied with smooth carbonation and a lingering, sweet, woody finish. overall, a great barrel aged winter ale.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle (22 oz). 2012 vintage. Shared by mathieuc, thanks! Dark brown with a small beige head and little lacing. Aroma is mostly of bourbon along with vanilla, wood, caramel, light spices and light chocolate. Taste is moderately sweet with a lot of bourbon (even after 1+ year), vanilla, caramel, spices, chocolate and light tobacco. Medium to full body. Low to moderate carbonation. Somewhat oily mouthfeel. Good English Strong Ale. A tad too heavy on bourbon, which doesn’t help the complexity/balance/drinkability of the beer. Good.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
bottle shared by mathieuc, thanks bro. pours very dark brown, red hue, with a small light beige cap, some retention. loads of bourbon oak, coconut, vanilla, sweet yet complex caramel layers, nuttiness, maple, lactose, chocolate, tobacco, chalk. low carbonation, medium to full body - oily and sticky, grassy-spicy-chalky doughy cloying finish. ASA feeling. clean yeast and/or no english character and/or simply overshadowed by barrel treatment. sort of blah.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Pours dark brown on black with a slight etching of light mocha foam. Smells fucking awesome, bourbon, vanilla, nougat, caramel, vitamins and minerals, some marshmallow cream and a little bit of burnt cream. Taste follows suite - vanilla, nougat, marshmallow, chocolate, bourbon, oak, smooth malts with a touch of alcohol. Really decadent. Full bodied with limited carb and a fantastically long and mouth watering finish. I’m really, really impressed with this beer. Wow. Nice.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours black, red on edges, minimal tannish head.
Smell big whisky oaky vanilla, red fruit, barrel forward, sweet.
Taste big woody, fruity, bourbon. Bit of alcohol heat, lots of vanilla and coconut, light winter spices.
Medium to fuller bodied.
This is a great beer from a great brewery.

4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
My favorite Washington Beer. This strong ale is an absolute beast. Pours as thick as a stout with a delicious balance of bourbon flavors. Warning, it is heavy on the bourbon flavor. If you like your’s on the more subtle side then this may not be the one for you.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
label, frankly, angers me .. . pours out brown .. like you know, brown .. . foam head was low .. . lacing was ray butt .. . bourbon presence was easy, the flavour was abominable .. . decent but nothing i’d hide in the woods and eat people over..

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
22 ounce bottle into snifter, 2012 vintage. Pours fairly pitch black color with a small tan head with poor retention, that reduces to a thin lace that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, cinnamon, toast, dark bread, pepper, clove, bourbon, vanilla, oak, toffee, raisin, brown sugar, and roasted earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity of malt, spice, and barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, dark bread, cinnamon, vanilla, oak, clove, bourbon, toffee, molasses, light raisin, and roasted earthiness. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, cinnamon, dark bread, clove, vanilla, oak, bourbon, toffee, brown sugar, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity and balance of malt, spice, and barrel flavors; with huge robustness and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light carbonation and very full bodied; with a very creamy, slick, and moderately syrupy mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an absolutely incredible barrel aged winter ale! All around incredible balance and complexity of dark malt, spice, and barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly amazing offering as expected.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Taster from a bottle shared at Natifest 2013. Dark brown, but clear color. Minimal light brown head. Couple loose bits of lace. Awesome big bourbon aroma. Dark chocolate, light tannin, light spice. Bigger body. Light chewiness. Very light carbonation. Dry finish. Bigger bitter taste. Very nice barrel influence, here. Nice, big bourbon barrel aged beer.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 19/20
2013 Bottle shared by some sweet soul at Natifest. The bourbon barrel is subtle, really highlighting the awesome beer. Strong chocolate, vanilla stands out, but there is a nuttiness and some coffee too. This may have been the beer of Natifest 2013 for me.
