Not much on the nose, and not much head. Otherwise a blockbuster. Some bourbon notes, so I assume this was aged in barrels? Not sure about that. Coffee and roasty malts and a bit of cocoa. Thick and rich. Great stuff.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sampled at taproom. Dark brown pour with minimal beige head that blended into the sides of the lacing on the glass. Light aroma overall. Fireplace scent mixed with vanilla. Rich flavor. Syrupy sticky mouthfeel that finishes slightly dry. Low carbonation. Vanilla and cream flavor perfectly paired with roasty woodsy flavors that impart a bitterness. Easy drinking stout with great flavor.

UPDATED: OCT 12, 2013 Growler from the brewery. Pours inky dark brown with thin oily mocha head. Aroma is big roasty malts and a slight hint of coffee. Chocolate malts shine through, along with a substantial hop presence. Finish is a little harsh - heavily bitter with some funky notes. Nice thick body but the balance is a bit off here. Would do well with some barrel aging to smooth out these flavors. Now I just need to get my hands on some Kentucky Dark Star...
Update: revisiting on nitro @ the brewery 1 year later. Thick mocha (nitro) head. Chocolate and coffee notes much more prominent here. Balance is dialed too. This is an excellent Imperial Stout. Revising rating to reflect improvement (went from a 3.5 to a 4)

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: SEP 11, 2012 On tap at Beer Authority. Pours black with a minimal head. Smell is sweet malty chocolate. Taste is grainy, sweet chocolate, hint of coffee but without the ashy flavor a lot of imperials get. Fantastic.
Raspberry version. Black with a finger head. Smell is smokey coffee roast. Taste is thinner bodied, oats and some red fruit, but still lots of roast. Very nice variation on a good base beer.
