French Broad Brewery’s interpretation of the classic UK Extra Special Bitter. A bright copper color with a complex malt palate is complemented by traditional British hops, notably East Kent Golding. French Broad has made this classic public house session beer a cult classic with its skull and crossbones artwork.

It pours copper with a slightly off white head. There are aromas of toast, nuts, and bread. The flavors are the same. It has a fairly light body with a moderate bitter finish.

Can into el rey del mundo glass. Big foaming head goes rocky. Smell is typical beery aroma. Look is not as dark as iced tea and it’s slightly cloudy. Taste is ESB-ish fer sure. Perhaps a little more personality than I care for, but its not bad overall. Decent co2. Yes, a little medicinal for 5%. Does not hide the alky well. Goes down fairly easy. Finish leaves that slight medicinal feel on yer palate. So, is the skull and bones a pirate label or that of the 13 colonies? WTF?

Poured from a 12 OZ can into a pint glass. Aroma- Has an aroma of malt, yeast and hops. Not bad Appearance- Pours a copper color with a small white head. Taste- Bitter with a citrus bite, not that enjoyable Palate- A medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. Overall- An average ESB. The artwork on the can is the best part of this beer.

Slightly cloudy medium amber pour that is a brownish orange. Outstanding head volume and retention, fair lacing. Medium intensity nose that has a slight biscuit sweetness, a touch of citrus (orange) and a hint of EKG. Medium bodied with a very smooth texture. Poorly carbonated with no effervescence. The flavor profile is unique, and not in a way that supports the style. It begins with a weak flavor that is similar to an orange citrus tea, but is not quite pleasant. This flavor permeates throughout the tasting experience. The middle typically expresses bitterness, but this brew delivers only a hint. The finish is a continued lingering of the initial odd flavor. I’ve had many ESBs over the years and home brewed with EKG as well. This beer is a poor example of the style and use of EKG hops.
