COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
French Broad Brewery’s interpretation of the classic UK Extra Special Bitter. A bright copper color with a complex malt palate is complemented by traditional British hops, notably East Kent Golding. French Broad has made this classic public house session beer a cult classic with its skull and crossbones artwork.

Draft, Barley’s Taproom, Asheville NC. Slight malt sweetness and intense bitter hops on the nose. Dark copper color and very bubbly. Mild citrus hops flavor along with some apple over a medium alcohol and bitter malt body. Dry finish. A great ESB.

Had this one on tap at The Federal in Durham. Served it at cellar temperature. Light copper color with tenacious head. Low to moderate carbonation. Malty aroma and flavor with mild hop bitterness. Smooth finish.

Pours a golden yellow with a nice head. Flavor is nice but way to bitter for me. Not something Ill ever try again

Draft. Coppery, with little white yead. Smells a little hoppy, but the bitterness was lacking. It tasted underhopped and malty. Crisp finish, but not a particularly noteworthy beer.

draft. orange, clearer, small white head. aroma of oily piney hops...i like that...very hop dominated character, not a typical ESB, a little light, reminds me of a typical IPA, good though.

Slightly hazy golden color with no head. Spicy hop aromas lead to a very hoppy beer all around. From the bitter floral flavors in the beginning to the dry, smooth aftertaste, this is less balanced than other ESBs. Not much malt flavors to speak of. Some crisp citrus flavors, but not enough to round this out.

Hazy amber coloured body with a thinnish off-white head. Aroma of english malt with some toffee and caramel sweetness. Medium-bodied; Strong caramel and english hoppiness flavours roaming well in the palate. Aftertaste lingers long with that good english maltiness and a subtle hoppiness (low a.a.) showing well. Overall, a nice bitter-good for the style, but not outstanding. I sampled this pint on draught at Barley’s in Knoxville, Tennessee on 03-October-2004.
