COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
French Broad Brewery’s interpretation of the classic UK Extra Special Bitter. A bright copper color with a complex malt palate is complemented by traditional British hops, notably East Kent Golding. French Broad has made this classic public house session beer a cult classic with its skull and crossbones artwork.

On draft. Pours a clear amber-orange with a small white ring of head that leaves no lace. Nose involves caramel malt, spicy and earthy hop notes, maybe a touch of peach. Some sweetness, but a bit more bitterness. Light side of medium bodied, cleansing palate, with a crisp herbal bitter finish. A nice brew, subdued but tasty.

a much maltier esb than i was expecting, almost like a brown ale or a smoother amber. bright somewhat tangy flavor. an above average, if somewhat off kilter, version of the style.

12oz can. Amber pour with a big lacy spidery head. Sweet and lightly spicy. Nice. Flavor is bright and lively. Good stuff.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy orange with small off white head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is wheat grass and light hop. Thin mouthfeel with a strong grain malt and light earthy hop. Decent

Burnt amber color with a thin lacing of white head. Aroma is slightly musty with a faint nuttiness. Flavor is light caramel, toasted malt, a little burnt on the finish. Not bad, though I remember liking it a little more at the brewery than from the bottle today. Would make a decent session if I was looking for something smooth and malty.

Bad label, bomber. Dark gold, light amber, clear, thin white head. Aroma is a bit like sweet iced tea. One-note golding hops. Dry, thin, not very complicated. Long, dry bitter finish. Thanks to LuckyDog.

UPDATED: FEB 7, 2014 On tap at Taco Mac. Pours a clear amber orange with a near white head that lasts throughout the beer and laces. Aroma has a bit of a smoke note and is full of earthy grains and hay. Flavor is full of the same earthy notes throughout with hints of must and smoke in the finish.

From tap. Pours medium amber with nice head. Malty aroma with a sweet malt taste. Spicey bitter. Good for an ESB.
