COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
French Broad Brewery’s interpretation of the classic UK Extra Special Bitter. A bright copper color with a complex malt palate is complemented by traditional British hops, notably East Kent Golding. French Broad has made this classic public house session beer a cult classic with its skull and crossbones artwork.

3/12/11. On tap. Clear amber pour with a creamy off-white head that lasts and laces a ton. Light biscuit aroma of caramel and chocolate. Very nice malty flavor with chocolate and earthy hops. Yum.

Draft at the tasting room. Copper, small, thin, almost absent head. Aroma is grassy and biscuity. Biscuit, malt, dry and grassy bitterness.

Pours a hazy burnt orange with a sticky beige head. Smells of butterscotch and toasted bread. Toasted malt dominates the palate with hints of orange and butterscotch. Citrusy hops are noticeable, but not overpowering, in the finish, which is long, dry, and a tad bitter, but pleasantly so. It’s a little oily and slick in the mouth, but that dry finish is a nice contrast. Overall, it’s a very solid beer. Plenty of flavor, good balance, nothing overpowering. Fun lacing, too.

Good beer. Tried it a week or two ago. Good ESB, though I prefer Fuller’s. Good bitter!

Courtesy ChzMan. Copper/orange, white carbonation. Biscuity malt and floral, bitter, grassy hops. Dry, bitter finish. Medium body, highly carbonated, easy to drink. Nice hoppy session brew.

Had this one on tap at The Federal in Durham. Served it at cellar temperature. Light copper color with tenacious head. Low to moderate carbonation. Malty aroma and flavor with mild hop bitterness. Smooth finish.

On tap at Barley’s. Creamy off-white head with moderate retention on top of a caramel-colored body. It had a slightly biscuity malt aroma with some crisp hops. The flavor was nice and malty with plenty of herbal hops to back it up, especially in the finish. Very tasty!

A good example of a bitter. Good color, aroma and hoppy finish. Touches of malt flavors in the taste. All-in-all a pleasing beer to drink.

Bomber thanks to Steph’s mom. Hazy copper color with creamy off-white head. Aroma is caramel and nutty, biscuit and toast, dry. Flavor is biscuit and toast with some tartness, very malt forward, caramel, in style. Medium to thin with creamy carbonation. Very much in style and drinkable.

22oz bomber. Clean orange-tan, big fluffy off-white head. Medium bodied, very clean. Definitely has some caramel tastes going on, but the malts are so clean that it really works. I could have gone for a little more a hop kick, but this seems pretty true to style. I could session these all night, really enjoyable.
