COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
French Broad Brewery’s interpretation of the classic UK Extra Special Bitter. A bright copper color with a complex malt palate is complemented by traditional British hops, notably East Kent Golding. French Broad has made this classic public house session beer a cult classic with its skull and crossbones artwork.

750 ml. clear copper with off white head. nice malt palate with a light bitter to balance. there is an acidic quality to the palate but i minded it less over the course of the bottle. good.

Sample @ French Broad during RBWG, Asheville. Amber pour with a small off-white head. The nose is quite toasty. Burnt brown bread. Almonds and trail mix. Light raisin. Taste has a mellow herbal hop accent. Plenty of toffee. Chewy malt. Light body, strong carbonation for the style. Serviceable.

In a 12 oz can. Not sure why this doesn’t rate much higher. Rich caramel flavors without being sweet or sticky, thanks mostly to some citrus hoppiness at the end. Could drink this for days.

I’m not huge fan of the ESB style, but this one is rather enjoyable. Soft carbonation, right amount of hops to malt balance, creamy head, beautiful to look at. Well done.

Draft at the brewery during RBWG. Pours a clear orange amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have toasted bread, grains, mild caramel/toffee notes with some mild fruity character, light resin and earth. Mild bitterness to the finish.

Poured from 22 oz bottle. Pours a dark gold. Thin white lace finish. I definitely pick up the caramel in the aroma, as well as the taste. A pretty good beer. Will drink again.

@ Whole Foods Market / Asheville NC --- Dark amber with a thin film head cover, wide streaks of lace. Malt and sorghum open this, adding carbonation and burnt toast in the palate before yielding to solid floral hops in the finish. A little heavy in the stomach, especially for 5.2% abv. Drinkable, not memorable or satisfying.

Taster on tap at Barley’s during RBWG 2014. Clear burnt orange color. Thin off-white head. Good thicker lace. Light to medium body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Nice caramel, lightly rich nutty malt, very nice english-style malt profile. Moderate bitter, more sweet taste. Nice balance. Nice light tropical fruit notes. Tasty, balanced ESB, with nice American influences.

From a bomber I bought at the brewery. Clear amber with a nice beige head that becomes blotchy. A little carbonation floats up. A bready malted aroma is very much to style. The flavor is also quite malty with that bread, grains, and toffee. Hops are light, as they should be. Bitterness and fruit are tasted from them. The yeast gives a cleanness to this beer that is akin to a lager. This is to style and is nicely done.

Draft at the brewery taproom during RBWG 2014 - Asheville. Pours clear gold with a foamy, white head. Tasty little ESB, does the style justice. Light toasted malts, brown bread. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Further basic, bready malts to finish with light pine needle bitterness. Relatively clean and very drinkable. Good effort.
