4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
22 oz. Deep chocolate color with a lasting quarter inch of creamy foam. Aromas of coffee, cocoa, caramel with hints of oats and berries. Flavor is more up front with the sour cream and tart berry, but the roasty chocolate, char and coffee come on strong to provide an exquisite balance. Medium body is silky smooth, has a nice dry-roast finish, and goes down very easy. One of the best porters I’ve ever tasted.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Lots of milk chocolate on the nose, with roasted barley notes. Good amount of carbonation. Head is slightly brown in color and very even. Drinking in a Guinness glass it looks quite similar but not as creamy. Lots of roasted flavor in this one, chocolate, coffee notes. Light mouthfeel. Aftertaste is bitter with some hop characteristic. Nicely made beer, rather thin on the palate.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
22 oz bottle
A relative bargain at $3.99 this still did not manage to live up to my expectations. Perhaps French Broad is one of those breweries that creates beers which are "good enough" without putting more effort or maybe my bottle was just an exception. Either way as it is not something that I can readily pick up in Ohio I won’t be seeking it out unless I happen to be a road trip somewhere it is distributed.
Aroma / Appearance - The flat lifeless pour was devoid of energy like a factory worker coming from a double shift. There may have been some carbonation but it was rather hard to tell through the murky body. Charcoal soaked in black coffee makes it retain the odor of a cup purchased at the local gas station (or McDonalds) and then left to cool overnight in the car. It has some character but mostly just leaves you scratching your head wondering where the rest of the experience is.
Flavor / Palate - Iced black coffee was no shock. A milky touch at the end was unexpected and livened things a bit. As a baseline porter this does the job well enough to be drinkable but not so much that I couldn’t think of any other number of alternatives that would just as good or better. If you’re trying to cut the beer budget locals / regionals like this might be an option. If you want truly great beer spend a bit more and get something better.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Black with a thin white lacing of head. Aroma is slightly roasted and just a tiny bit musty. Flavor is strongest right up front with a nice roasted malt, slightly nutty. Balancing out quickly with a very slight hop character underneath. Finishes clean with just a hint of sweetness that lingers on the tongue. Solid porter.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Very dark brown, mostly clear. Very nice chocolate and light roast in the aroma. The hops are there but are definitely not a dominant note. Very easy to drink and enough flavor to be interesting. This is a thumbs up porter.

Bomber. Dark brown but clear. Small tan head. Nose is a bit light with notes of smokiness and roasted malts. Taste is the same as the nose. Light body for a porter. Very average. I’ve not been impressed with any of the French Broad line so far.
