4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bomber from Gailís Hops & Grapes in Hickory, NC, opened 4/13/11. Pours a clear very dark brown color with a medium sized frothy tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of rich chocolate notes, roasted malts, faint nutty notes. The taste is roasted malts, chocolate, bitter citrus and floral hops, nutty finish. Medium bodied. Straightforward porter, but very well made. I can imagine myself sitting at some bar in Asheville putting back pint after pint of this stuff.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bomber. Pours black with a huge gushing dark tan head. Aroma and flavor are heavy with milk chocolate with some coffee and raisins. Slightly smoky; rather sweet. Some roast malt; minimal hop presence. Thin palate. Strikes me more as almost a dunkel than a porter. Not terribly English, which would nothave added chocolate and would have some more balance.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
22 oz. Deep chocolate color with a lasting quarter inch of creamy foam. Aromas of coffee, cocoa, caramel with hints of oats and berries. Flavor is more up front with the sour cream and tart berry, but the roasty chocolate, char and coffee come on strong to provide an exquisite balance. Medium body is silky smooth, has a nice dry-roast finish, and goes down very easy. One of the best porters Iíve ever tasted.
