4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 ChainGangGuy (3837) - Canton, USA - JAN 27, 2011
16 ounce pint - $5.25 at Taco Mac in Woodstock, Georgia.
Appearance: Effectively, a black body, though, as you drink it down, some mahogany shades appear at the edges. Scant, beige head, but they really fill ’er up here at Taco Mac.
Smell: Dark kilned malts, though not overtly roasty or burnt, instead calmly leaning towards sweetish chocolate and caramel.
Taste: Dark maltiness prominently featuring sweet chocolate tones, though a bit Tootsie Roll-esque. Also, some sweet caramel. It’s never particularly roasty, at best you’re given a hint of sugar sweetened coffee. A few drops of prune juice. Understated hoppiness and a low level of bitterness. Remains chocolaty approaching the finish, picking up a bit of vanilla, and ends with still a bit of residing residual sweetness.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.
Drinkability: Stays on the soft, sweet, malty side of things, making for a pleasing, tasty brew.

On draught at The Pharmacy in Nashville. Brownish-black pour with a medium tan head that diminishes steadily to an outer ring. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet malt and coffee. Medium body with flavors of roasted coffee, sweet malt and a touch of hops. The finish is roasty with a mocha aftertaste. Decent overall.

Draft at the tasting room. Black, tan wispy head. Aroma is roasty and almost smokey. Dry, bitter, not nearly as roasty as the aroma would let on.

22oz bottle bought in Asheville. Deep brown-black with a fading beige head. Medium bodied, a touch watery. A nice range of flavors going on...brown chocolate, mild coffee bitterness, a faint touch of wood, cherry. Comes together quite nicely, well balanced. Mellow, gentle carbonation. Bonus points for holding up after 6 months in the closet.

22 ounce bottle that poured a dark brown, almost black color with aromas of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and some cream. Flavor is the same with a mild sugary flavor and toffee hints throughout. Nice porter overall.

Bomber. Poured medium brown with a short-lived, smoked beige head. The aroma picked up charred black patent malts and dry-roasted chocolates, with light hay and grassy accents.. not substantial or complex, but nice. The flavor found roasty black malts and lesser chocolate.. lots of dry roast on the edges.. a tad sour and cardboardey on the finish. Medium-bodied at most on the palate.. dry and roasty.. OK flow.. very drinkable.

Bomber--pours a real dark brown with with froathy, tan head, lacing lasted throughout the drink. The aroma starts with roasted malts and once that fades, chocolate comes to the top. The taste was simliar with a floor of hops and coffee. Some nut taste comes through on the finish. Everthing is balance and straight forward. Another good brew from French Broad.

Dark brown/black pour ... not cloudy but almost opaque from the dark color. Nice tan head that quickly fades. Aroma of kalua, chocolate and alcohol. Sweet Chocolate mocha flavor with a soft bitter finish (slight hint of ashtray). Medium bodied (thinner than I expected) and fairly high carbonation level (soda like). Tad bit of astringency. Nice. French Broad is becoming one of my favorite NC breweries.
