While known for their lagers, German brewers also produce terrific ales. French Broad’s Kölsch is faithful to the great German ales found in Köln. Golden in color, with a refreshing crispness, pleasantly sweet malt finish, and distinctive German hopping.

From the July 2014 3R6P gathering. +++ Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a clear pale yellow color with a medium sized foamy white head that lingered and left a bit of lacing. The aroma was tangy and sweet Pez, vague fruits and artificial sugar. The flavor was tart and bitter bread dough, Pez and citrus. Medium length finish. Light to medium body. Meh.

Pretty good Kolsch, nothing really sets it apart from any other beers of this same style. Really liked their IPA, not so much this beer.

Sample @ French Broad during RBWG, Asheville. Gold pour with a modest white head. Pretty mellow aroma. Some honeyed bread, cotton field. The taste is crisp, clean. Light apple and pear fruit salad. Bready malt. Light body, soft carbonation. Well-behaved, meek. Decent.

Appearance: a hazy light golden color, pours with a large beige head that settles pretty quick Aroma: strong wheat, bread, banana Taste: kind of bland, hints of wheat, also very faint hints of industrial lager Palate: lively carbonation, light mouthfeel, leaves mouth dry, minimal aftertaste Overall: pretty disappointed in this one, it's just too bland, ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a clear golden yellow on tap with bubbly white head that leaves light lace. Aroma is nice crisp malt and kolsch yeast. Taste follows, super clean and easy. Enjoyable, bubbly carbonation, nothing special but solid for the style.

On tap at Native Kitchen. Probably a good example of the style, but that, in essence is the problem. I could say it’s crisp and light and refreshing and a passable summer beer, but really it’s pretty boring. Taste is grainy and somewhat minerally. Has some wine characteristics. Not much in the way of hops or finish but fairly drinkable overall. Good crossover beer.

Draft at RBWG. Pours a clear yellow/pale golden color with a small white head. The aroma and flavor have bready, cereal and crackery malts, mild sweetness, grass, mild bitterness, clean but not very much going on with this.

@ Whole Foods Market / Asheville NC --- Clear golden amber with a 1" head that doesn’t give up, splotches of lace. Taste is malt with pencil shavings, honey, and dark earth. Light bittering enters in the finish. I’m not certain it is fresh, as these flavors don’t match my experience with the kolsch style. I expected better.

Can. Kolsch is such a boring beer and this is no exception. Clean and boring. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Taster at the brewery- thanks! Pours a pale, clear gold with a small, wispy white head. Aroma of grass, grains, and crackery malts. Flavor of grass, grains, crackery and cereal malts, leaves, and minerals. Light-bodied, with medium carbonation and a crisp, dry, malty mouthfeel. Not a bad kolsch.
