While known for their lagers, German brewers also produce terrific ales. French Broad’s Kölsch is faithful to the great German ales found in Köln. Golden in color, with a refreshing crispness, pleasantly sweet malt finish, and distinctive German hopping.

Bottle. Sweet grainybarley malt aroma. Hazy deep gold with a small white head, poor retention. Barley malt, and very light grassy flavor. Body on the light side of medium, soft carbonation.

Very clean grainy and grassy aromas with hints of light fruit. Bright clear golden with a small but respectable head. Balanced with notes of grain and floral hops. Light bodied and very refreshing.

Comes out of the tap a clear golden, bit of a white head. Malty aroma has an overtone of pear. Crisp, malty flavor has a firm note of pear and a hoppy undertone. Texture has only average thickness but good fizz, and leaves behind a fairly persistent tingle. A gateway to what? Perhaps a good "gateway" beer to wean people off the industrial swill.

Thanks to LuckyDog for bringing this back from the ACC tourney. Very pale, clear beer; bad label. Dry, grainy aroma. Lightly sweet, mildly tangy, a little lemon nice flavor. Generally crisp. Light bodied and drinkable without obvious flaws.

Clear and pale yellow color, not a huge head, but good carbonation. Faithful to the kolsch style.

From tap at brewery. Golden pour with high head. Aroma was bready with a sour hint. Taste followed. Clean and crisp but slight off taste for me.

Beer #15 Asheville trip. Liked the fact that they just came out and called it a Gateway beer. Having said that, it is a nicely done Kolsch. Clear, golden, nice head. Aroma is biscuity malts. Flavor is a match, just a faint hint of floral hops. Pleasant, well made brew.

Bomber--old rating. Gold color with a short, small, fizzy head. No real aroma noted. Sweet biscuit taste with some yeast. Fruit on the finish. Bought at the brewery, 4.00.
