While known for their lagers, German brewers also produce terrific ales. French Broad’s Kölsch is faithful to the great German ales found in Köln. Golden in color, with a refreshing crispness, pleasantly sweet malt finish, and distinctive German hopping.

Draft at the brewery. Poured golden with a medium-sized sparkling white head. Aroma is spicy, bright German hops and a little bit fruity/malty. Flavor is mild hop bitterness, lightly sweet, mildly fruit. Carbonation is crisp and effervescent. Mouthfeel is medium. A well done Kolsch. Would be great during the summer.

22oz bottle picked up in Asheville. Pours a true to style hazy golden-tan, with a thin, respectable head and some lively rising carbonation bubbles. Creamy, classic beer taste, really well executed. Soft and delicate, I get a little brewhouse butter in the aroma, very faint. Minty orange hop balance. Clean. This is a really great stateside example of the style, refreshing.

From the 22oz bottle. Hazy pale yellow pour with a huge white head. Grainy, earthy noble hops and hints of yeast fruitiness in the aroma. Crisp malt body with a light earthy hop taste. Taste session beer.

Draft at the brewery. Bright golden and clear. Crisp and malty with a nice little tangy finish. Fairly authentic, even if the warehouse setting isn’t quite Cologne. (#4327, 10/7/2011)

A kolsch is never going to score very high in this system. The aroma is not much to speak of. Very crisp clean taste. Pours golden with an inch of foam and a great deal of effervescence. Fantastic summer beer.

bottle, from Beer Dispensary in Apex. consumed 06-13-11. good aroma, bitter. grassy, sourdough, little sugar streak about it. Tad hazed golden yellow. Good head, minor lace. bitter sweet flavor. Light body, creamy smooth mouthfeel, bitter dry finish. Nice, very drinkable, Like the aroma best, maybe a tad sweet for the style, but a nice lawn mower beer. Another on my list that I’m surprised I didn’t have notes on as I drank alot of this last year when it was on tap at Tyler’s Apex. oh well,

Pours gold and slightly hazy with a pronounced white head. Smells of dry malt, lightly floral, appley. Tastes appley and lightly malty with some spicy hints on the finish.
