While known for their lagers, German brewers also produce terrific ales. French Broad’s Kölsch is faithful to the great German ales found in Köln. Golden in color, with a refreshing crispness, pleasantly sweet malt finish, and distinctive German hopping.

Not exactly my favorite brew. Aroma was slightly fruity with a note or two of hops. flavor was very light without much at all. A fine brew to drink in the summertime while mowing the lawn

Bot. Somewhat soapy aroma. Lighter pale slight haze. Large rocky head that does not fade. Initially good co2. Taste is quite hoppy and bitter for what I believe to be a kolsch. Yes, almost astringent on the tongue. perhaps there is a tad of sweetness but that astringent impact is so prevalent. Same with the finish. A little difficult to enjoy.

Draft sample. The beer is a clear gold with a white head of foam. The aroma has a doughy quality with some dry, floral notes. Moderate sweetness and bitterness. Well balanced. Medium body and medium carbonation.

I’m generally not a big Kolsch, but this was a pleasant surprise. Not overly bitey like some Kolsch can be

12 oz. can. Pours crystal-clear golden yellow with a small white head. Up front is malty honey flavor with light grassiness. Moderately sweet body with a reasonably bittered finish. Medium, slightly sticky body. Solid beer, maybe a bit sweet to session too many of these.

Light and lemony, but not as light as I’d like. Grassy hop finish, a bit of a stale hop character. Picked up in Asheville in 2015.

Transparent golden yellow with a white head. Bready grain aroma. Flavors are noble hops up front followed by a nice Pilsner malt flavor. Great balance. Very well made.

Keg at the Weinhaus, Asheville, 17/02/15. Clear golden with a decent off white covering. Nose is pale malts, straw, caramel, light lemon vibe. Taste comprises citric peel, vanilla, light caramel, bready. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Adequate for style.

Location: Draft at Weinhaus, 12/31/14

Aroma: Grainy and cereal malts, some crisp German hops, and fruity notes
Appearance: Pours a clear golden color with a decent sized white head and average lace
Flavor: Tastes similarly, with clean German hops, grainy/cereal malts, lightly sweet and bitter
Palate: The body is light-medium, nice mouthfeel, not watery at all, clean and easy drinking
Overall Impression: I thought this was a solid, enjoyable example of the style. The malt and hops are in a nice balance. It is not amazing, but I had no complaints.
