From the brewers who gave you E-Z IPA and SuperHero IPA, the much-anticipated, long-awaited, first-in-history year-round India Pale Ale from the French Broad Brewery.

French Broad IPA makes a loud hiss, when the cap is popped, and the appearance is of bright, brilliant, somewhat opaque, deep orange, bubble streams, and some splotchy, thin lacing left on the glass. The head is medium and off white. The aroma is of a sharp, very citrusy, juice. Maybe, like tangerine? Taste is of the same thing, and the beer evokes Lemon Head or Sweet-Tarts. Bitterness is present, but relatively low. Mouthfeel is medium, and French Broad IPA finishes mostly dry and odd. Overall, this is a strange one, but it does improve with the drinking. RJT

A well Balanaced IPA. Nice malty backbone that offsets the hop bitterness. 7% abv is well integrated into the beer.

Bomber. Pours a clear amber with a small white head that leaves spotty lacing. Dank hoppy aroma of pine, grass, bread and caramel. Taste is earthy hops up front with a solid malty base of caramel and bread. No citrus here, which isn’t always a bad thing. Long, dry finish of caramel and bready malts. Light to medium body, sticky texture, lively carbonation. A pretty solid IPA here.

Sample @ French Broad during RBWG. Amber pour with a small white head. Plenty of caramel on the nose. Dat crystal malt. Melon concentrate and fruit leather. More melon and caramel flavors. Light honeyed grass. Moderately bitter on the finish. Medium body, average carbonation. Not unpleasant, but sweet.

I thought this was a great beer for the price <$4 and it comes from a local brewery! The best that I have had from this brewery thus far.

The color is a cloudy orange color with a medium white head, and the aroma blends caramel and bready malts with floral hops. The taste is mildly bitter, slightly sour and a touch sweet, and the palate fuses a sticky texture, medium body, soft carbonation, and a bitter finish. Overall, this beer isn’t really anything special.

UPDATED: AUG 25, 2015 On tap at Barley’s. Probably my favorite yet from these guys. Pours a nice orange- clear with a white head. Full on flavors going on- citrus, orange, toffee, pine, bread. Finishes decently- smooth and bitter. Well balanced Has a dankness to it that works. Sort of slick mouthfeel. Had right after Green Man IPA and definitely like this one better. At brewery. 07/08/14. Love the color. Definitely solid. Not much head to speak of. Dankness works. Piney and resin dominate. Bitter And dry on the finish. IPA that is not afraid to be an IPA.

It poured a clear orange color with a white head. The aroma was of toffee, grass, pine, orange and tangerines. The taste was of grass, pine, citrus notes, a hint of caramel and biscuit. Nice.

Draft at brewery during RBWG. Pours a clear dark golden to amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have what I would expect in a basic IPA; some resiny, earthy and mild citrus hops with toasted malt and light caramel. Mild bitterness to the finish.

22 oz bottle served in a snifter. A: amber color; clear with modest size off-white head. The head is exceptionally sticky and leaves great lacing. There’s plenty of grapefruit and orange in both the aroma and the taste. The malt is more evident in the nose, and implied by the tempered bitterness in the taste. The beer is, nonetheless, rather bitter, with a lingering grapefruit rind flavor in the aftertaste. Alcohol is not hidden at all. M: smooth; very good carbonation level; medium body; semi-dry finish. O: a solid if rather unremarkable IPA. Enough hop load to satisfy hop heads. {From 2012 notes}
