COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Ryehopper began as a fall seasonal and has now found it’s way into our regular line-up. The brewers noticed a lack of rye beers in the Asheville area and wanted to fill that gap. This beer represents assistant brewer Chris Richards’ first recipe released by the brewery. The malted rye contributes both a rounded maltines and a sharp earthy flavor, bridging the maltiness of the barley and the bitterness of the hops. In essence, the Ryehopper is a hoppy rye beer. Seriously, what else did you expect?

Not bad. Pours a dark brown color with a nice tan head. Aroma was fairly hoppy and grainy. Flavor was too with a bit of nuttiness to it. I liked this one. Great job.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2009 Tap at Brewgrass festival. Coppery brown pour with small off-white head. Slightly toasty, malty caramel nose and some rye and hop spice. Notes of ash and s surprisingly fruity character and nice bitter finish. I really enjoy a good rye beer, and this wasn’t so hoppy that it hid the rye. Tasty. RETASTE: Had on tap at the Federal this weekend, and really loved it. Had side by side with Founder’s Red Rye and the freshness of the Hopper won, hands down. Great beer.

Brown, thin beige head. Rye toast with caramel aroma. Lots of rye in the flavor, too, plus caramel. Some woodsy, earthy notes, too. Rye and hops. Pretty much what you’ve got here. Sampled at Brewgrass 2008.

pint @ Barley’s. Good aroma, sweet. Malty. Rye is subtle, a nutty fruity aroma. I got a cherry scent. Clean orangy brown color. little to no head or lace. Sweet bitter flavor, big initial sweet malty taste then the rye kicks in. Medium body, creamy mouth feel, bitter finish. Nice, but I didn’t get the rye bite I was expecting, aroma was the best part.

On tap at the brewery. Chestnut pour with minimal head. Spicy aroma with very apparent rye and a touch of malty sweetness. The flavor is every bit as spicy as the aroma lets on. A nice bit to this one. Plenty of rye (and as it turned out, this is almost 100% rye), spicy well matched hops and roasty note as well. Just a touch of sweetness to balance out the spice. Interesting does not quite cover it. Semi-dry light-medium body. A very interesting and enjoyable concept. I’d make on of these myself. But I guess you really need to like your rye.

(draft) Beige head atop clear copper body. Aroma is medium sweet, rye, caramel, orange/earthy, light peach. Taste is moderately sweet, caramel, earthy, some rye, light grapefruit, peach. Medium body, low carbonation.

Sampled at the brewery. Pours a light brownish amber with a thin white head. Spicy rye and roasty grain aroma. Smooth slightly malty taste, nice body. Still retains some of the roasted grain elements and the rye, though not as hoppy as I thought it would be. The grains seem to be highlighted more, which is nice. Very refreshing.
