Dark brown, almost black with a thin lacing of head. Aroma is slight, some roasted malt and a little musty. Flavor is a little sweet followed by a fairly strong bitterness though it doesn’t linger at all. Mouthfeel is very thin, it should have a fuller body. Overall, not bad but the lack of body really hurts this one.

From a 22 oz bottle this poured a rich red-amber color with a beige head. No appreciable lacing. Nose of caramel malts, and ripe dark fruit. Medium body. Flavor oaf rich malts and a little bitterness in the finish. Good.

Bomber bought at the brewery during RBWG. This is quite dark brown and has a beige head. A rich malt and toffee aroma that is big. Some earth and European hops are tasted along with the malts. The hops bring some fruit and are authentic here. They tend to grow and add some spice. I also taste toffee and something almost like candy. Dark fruit is tasted late along with some toasted bread. Not a favored style for me but this is a strong example.

Pours a clear copper brown from the bottle with thin ring of white lacy head that sticks well. Aroma is smoky, toasted brown malt, nuts, and a hint of funky wood. Taste follows, less of the smoky wood and more sweet. Solid stuff.

otakuden (1783) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - MAY 26, 2013
Appearance: Very dark browns with some claret and garnet edges linger under a solid khaki head. The head fades spotty but swirls smooth and creamy. No lace.
Nose: Chocolate cake, chocolate cookies, and chocolate wafers. Chocolate covered raisins – of the more sweet store-bought variety. Fig Newtons in the back. Moist cakey presence. Sunsweet whole prunes. Brown spices and caramel nougat on top and in the back.
Palate: Medium body with a moist cakey mouthfeel. Spicy Fig Newton finish. Chocolate and red velvet cake soaked in prune juice. Caramel and chocolate nougat weaves in and out. Chocolate covered graham crackers in the back of each swallow.
Final Thoughts: An intriguing take on the Wee Heavy/Scotch Ale style that was quite delicious actually but not exactly true to style. If you drink it for what it is, then you will be very happy. If you drink it expecting a traditional Wee Heavy, you will be somewhat disappointed.

On tap at green man Asheville. Good aroma of coffe, caramel, cream. Very dark mahogany with lacing tan head. Nut, coffee, toffee flavors. Some creamy malt and hop notes. Almost stout-like feel. Well done.
