At the brewery tap, Kreuzberg 16 July 2012. Hazy and medium brown in colour, with a decent, off-white head. Light smoke, some caramel sweetness, a touch of bacon in the lingering finish. Good.

From the Brauhaus am Kreuzberg. Swing-top by 27.09.12. This is actually my second "Schlotfegerla", the first being Weyermann’s Rauchbier. Nose is very sweet but dominated by Schlenkerla-style beech smoke. Very dark mahogany pour, cloudy with amber highlights and a rocky tan head. Taste is very sweet, lots of smoke but probably more wood, which is excellent, dries out by the end and the smooth smoky-wooden aftertaste maybe be the best part of it all. Medium body with just a little grit and ash, meaty and somewhat endearing despite its juvenile side -- I love the smoke but the syrupy malty sweetness is just out of control.

Bottle @ Uncle Chris’ house in Fürth. A bit hazy, reddish orange appearance with a light brown head. Lightly smoked, bacon, bacon, bacon, caramel, toasty malty aroma. Somewhat ashy smoky, rich bacon meaty, caramel flavor. Well carbonated. Really a nice beer worthy of picking up a rack.

(.5L fliptop bottle dated 7-10-10 thanks to blutt59) clearish brown with very few bubbles. Nose of wood, caramel, alcohol, maple and brown sugar. Taste is bland, grain, alcohol. Didn’t get a ton of smoke here.

Bottled. Deep slightly hazy red/orange/brown colour with a big creamy off-white head, that leaves some lace. Aroma is smoked wet wood, some sweet malts as well as some ashy notes. Flavour is roasted malts, some smoked wet wood, mild sweet malts as well as mild chocolaty notes.

Draught @ Friedel Keller, Kreuzberg. Pours unclear amber with a creamy white head and lacings. A bit of roast, caramel, grain and smoked meat. Clean. Medium bodied. Great smoked Schwarzbier.

It’s clear, dark mahogany-red with a huge, creamy, golden and lasting head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, light smoke, licorice and caramel. The flavour has a light sweetness and mild notes of camp fire, roasted malt, licorice and caramel. It’s relatively mild, but IMO harmonious and nice.

Im Geruch malzig-karamellig, getreidig. Zugleich zeigen sich röstig-rauchige Spuren. Antrunk süß und röstig. Anschließend schinkenrauchig, malzig und schokoladig. Angenehm würzig und rauchbitter abgleitend. Test vom 13.9.2010, Gebinde: Glasflasche Ein gutes Bier.

Koelschtrinker (10669) - Köln (Cologne), GERMANY - MAY 25, 2011
Zarte Räuchernote im Geruch, süßlich, hintenherum trocken, getoastet Richtung Schwarzbier. Herber Antrunk mit getoastet röstiger Note, eine rauchige Komponente ist auszumachen, sie hält sich aber dezent im Hintergrund und fällt nicht stärker auf. Erst im Mittelteil ist die Note etwas stärker, auch wenn die gleichzeitig steigende Herbe und die stark gerösteten Noten hier das Bier im Griff haben. Zusätzlich stört die starke Karbonisierung, die die Aromenbildung blockiert. So wird das Bier erst im Abgang deutlich stärkerm das Rauch kommt deutlich zum Tragen und harmonisiert tzm ersten Mal richtig mit den malzigen Noten des Scharzbieres. Wenig aber erkennbar passend süß, die Herbe nimmt ab und lässt eine leichte Bitterkeit vervor. Gelungenes Schwarzbier mit dezenten, dafür gut abgestimmten Rauchnoten. 10/11/9/11//11
