Dark straw colour, malty aroma, very boring beer. Need to rerate next trip up north.

On tap at Brauhaus Frings brewpub. Another nervous rating by stealth with the brew-master sitting at the table. Amber brown, thin ring head. Toffee, caramel aromas. Medium bitter, sour/acidity. Medium body, no carbonation, oily texture. Much better than any other NZ draught beer I have had.

Draught at the brew pub, a deep brown colour of an ox-blood hue, with a filmy head. A sweetish caramal malt aroma. The malty palate is sweet, but it is a touch vinegary, suggesting that this might be past its best.

(On tap) Clear, amber golden with an off-white head. Lightly burned and lightly acidic aroma. Light in body with weak notes of nuts and lightly burned malts. Dry finish with a discreet bitterness and again this vague acidity (the brewer tell he tunes the acidity up in his beers during summertime). A very unusual example of a NZ Draught, reminds me more of a Brown Ale although bottom fermented. 090208
