On tap at Brauhaus Frings brew pub. I was enjoying drinking and rating this when Dennis Frings the brewmaster came and sat down at my table. Feeling a bit nervous rating his beer in front of him most of the rating was by stealth. Dark brown hue with slight orange tint, thin beige creamy/bubbly mostly diminishing head with small amount of lacing. Nice sharp almost burnt dark malt aromas, hint of Freyas rye bread toast, I would have to say there is some bitter coffee and chocolate aromas in there. Unusual but nice mix of tastes again - Moderately bitter, noticeable but not unpleasant sourness, faint salty again, very light sweetness. Low carbonation, thin-medium body - expected more, oily texture. My favourite of the 3 that were on offer the day I was at Brauhaus Frings.

Draught at the brew pub, a dark brown with a filmy head. A strong roasted aroma, nearly burnt. A nice roasted malt flavour with coffee and bitter chocolate. Dry on the palate, but disappointingly thin.

(On tap) Clear, dark brown with a tint of orange and a creamy, beige head. Fairly burned almost coffeeish aroma. Light in body with notes of hard roasted malt and again notes of coffee in the flavour - is that from the roasted Weyermann rye malts? Again an underlying acidity. The finish is dry. Again this to me feels more like a Brown Ale, but Dennis Frings says it’s made with the house bottom fermenting yeast. In style it’s closest to a Schwarzbier. 090208
