Croak & Stagger is a 5.6% dark, full flavoured beer. This recipe for this chestnut-coloured brew includes American Cascade hops which contribute a sweet and spicy note to the aroma. The use of English Marris Otter pale malt, crystal malt, wheat malt and chocolate malt gives a flavour that is initially roasted and slightly bitter and develops to give a slight hint of dried vine fruits. The flavour of the Cascade hops and bitterness produced by the addition of English Target hops combine to produce an astringent aftertaste. This bottled beer was described as "a cold weather winner" in the Times newspaper of 18th April 1998, when it was rated as joint-second against bottled beers from around the country.

Bottle conditioned, 500ml. Red brown beer with slight head. Particularly malty, thickish beer with dark roasted notes. Some sweetish fruitiness with an astringent background. I found it to be quite a boring beer with few highlights.

Bottled: Reddish coloured .Unclear. Beige small head. Sweet and malty with light cocoa notes. Flavour is herbal and has cocoanotes. Roasty and sweet. Is quite full bodied, but a little vague in character. Dry and refreshing with a light bitter touch in the end.

Half pint, cask by handpump dispense at Guildford Arms in Edinburgh. Mahogany coloured body with a skinny strip of bubbly foam at the surface. Inviting smell of sweet dark caramel. Liquorice and dark caramel malts in taste mixed with tart fruits. Good stuff, perhaps a bit too sweet [11.11.2008].

UPDATED: MAR 16, 2005 Toffee coloured with an off-white head. Aromas are smooth chocolate and peppery hops. Flavours are, again, smooth chocolate with a dry bitter finish. Some plain chocolate, too. Moreish and as chocolately as Youngs Double Choc Stout.

UPDATED: MAY 31, 2010 Cask conditioned. Ruby coloured with a cream-coloured head. Aroma and flavours of coffee and chocolate yet hoppy at the same time. Very drinkable and moreish even at this strength. One of England’s finest winter ales.Score 3.9

Cask, ’The Joy of Six’ Merchantfest ’08, Rugby. Swigs of Octo’s, to be precise. Yeah, barnyard, mouldering fruit and dessicated frog. Ruby with rapidly diminishing head. Intriguing interplay of beansprout/mushroom earthiness and (strawberryish) hop fruit way back in the mix. A hint of roast, maybe chocolate. ’Interesting’.

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 8/7/2013. Medium brown with a hint of red and a decent, off-white head. Sweetish, caramel, red berry notes, followed by some plain chocolate and liquorice and finishing gently. A good beer.
