Croak & Stagger is a 5.6% dark, full flavoured beer. This recipe for this chestnut-coloured brew includes American Cascade hops which contribute a sweet and spicy note to the aroma. The use of English Marris Otter pale malt, crystal malt, wheat malt and chocolate malt gives a flavour that is initially roasted and slightly bitter and develops to give a slight hint of dried vine fruits. The flavour of the Cascade hops and bitterness produced by the addition of English Target hops combine to produce an astringent aftertaste. This bottled beer was described as "a cold weather winner" in the Times newspaper of 18th April 1998, when it was rated as joint-second against bottled beers from around the country.

Hand pulled at the Wellington, Birmingham. Dark, with ruby shafts. Big creamy beige slab atop. Aroma of jam. Some strong jammy, berry, with a coffee tinged pudding mouthfeel and flavour. Very rich finish - a little sour, bitter and faintly warming. A very smooth mouthful all told. Not tremendously defined, but big and slyly powerful.

UPDATED: JUN 14, 2008 [500ml bottle direct from brewery] Relabelled as "WheresThePath Peat Bog Porter" for my brother’s 30th Birthday under the brewery’s superb bottle personalisation service. Slight carbonation, very sweet, lots of malt, an over-riding taste of treacle, some stewed plums, a large dash of coca-cola and a hint of chocolate. A beautiful beer in small quantities, feer it may become rather cloying in larger amounts.

A Mes rate: Gravicask at Ealing Beer Festival.
Dark brown with a thin off white head. Good prickly hops, massively fruity malt and some spice and liquorice. Interesting stuff. Good malty and herbacious finish. Enjoyable.

Roasted malt, sweetish but balanced with fine bitterness. Citric fruits, spicy, bits of herbal notes and wood, caramel and chocolate. Even little sour. Muddy deep brown, dark orange body. Medium carbonated. Bitter, spicy and roasted aftertaste.

Cask - Planet Thanet Beer Festival ’09. A browny amber in colour with a thin layer of tan foam. Sweet aromas of honey and fruit with some smoked malts. Full flavours, smokey and malty with a dry malty bitter finish. Commendable palate texture, though the finish is perhaps a bit short.

Half pint, cask by handpump dispense at Guildford Arms in Edinburgh. Mahogany coloured body with a skinny strip of bubbly foam at the surface. Inviting smell of sweet dark caramel. Liquorice and dark caramel malts in taste mixed with tart fruits. Good stuff, perhaps a bit too sweet [11.11.2008].

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 8/7/2013. Medium brown with a hint of red and a decent, off-white head. Sweetish, caramel, red berry notes, followed by some plain chocolate and liquorice and finishing gently. A good beer.
