COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Croak & Stagger is a 5.6% dark, full flavoured beer. This recipe for this chestnut-coloured brew includes American Cascade hops which contribute a sweet and spicy note to the aroma. The use of English Marris Otter pale malt, crystal malt, wheat malt and chocolate malt gives a flavour that is initially roasted and slightly bitter and develops to give a slight hint of dried vine fruits. The flavour of the Cascade hops and bitterness produced by the addition of English Target hops combine to produce an astringent aftertaste. This bottled beer was described as "a cold weather winner" in the Times newspaper of 18th April 1998, when it was rated as joint-second against bottled beers from around the country.

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 8/7/2013. Medium brown with a hint of red and a decent, off-white head. Sweetish, caramel, red berry notes, followed by some plain chocolate and liquorice and finishing gently. A good beer.

Tasted this at the Troon Beer Festival in October 2007. Cask, gravity dispense. Clear dark ruby red in colour with a thin white head. Vinous, port like aroma which is strong in intensity. Robust yet smooth creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malt complex gives a sweet maltloaf base with rich roasted grain, roasted coffee, black plums, figs and treacle toffee. Spicy hops add a slight peppery note to the short bitter aftertaste. Malt returns to the smooth finish with rich plain chocolate, dry tiffin cake and walnuts. Slightly similair in style to Dent T’ Owd Tup. A superb English Strong Ale in style and long may they continue to thrive.

Bottle (from the november 2005 RB-tasting at Dixens place - notes have been damaged by flooding of my basement, but this was such an insane tasting for me as I was new to such massive tastings, so I gave up on the detailed notes quite early). Eeeeew. Earthy and sour in the baddest way. Not good! All I wrote abouyt this...

Cask - Planet Thanet Beer Festival ’09. A browny amber in colour with a thin layer of tan foam. Sweet aromas of honey and fruit with some smoked malts. Full flavours, smokey and malty with a dry malty bitter finish. Commendable palate texture, though the finish is perhaps a bit short.

Cask at the Eastbourne Beer Festival, 9th Oct 2008. Deep brown with a foam line of head. Dark resinous fruit aroma. Rich malty taste with an "oldness" about it. Chocolate flavours manifest after the initial sip. Lovely bittersweet finish. Good stuff, despite the name.

Half pint, cask by handpump dispense at Guildford Arms in Edinburgh. Mahogany coloured body with a skinny strip of bubbly foam at the surface. Inviting smell of sweet dark caramel. Liquorice and dark caramel malts in taste mixed with tart fruits. Good stuff, perhaps a bit too sweet [11.11.2008].

Roasted malt, sweetish but balanced with fine bitterness. Citric fruits, spicy, bits of herbal notes and wood, caramel and chocolate. Even little sour. Muddy deep brown, dark orange body. Medium carbonated. Bitter, spicy and roasted aftertaste.
