Winner of this year’s homebrew competition hosted by FSB. This Black IPA from James Lafferty is a sensory paradox: looks like a stout, drinks like an IPA. Special Carafa and caramel malts lend a light sweetness and brownie-like flavor, while Chinook, Cascade, and Willamette hops add contrast with zesty citrus, resiny pine, and a smooth bitterness. Named after local musician Shane Hall and his album “Less Than Vintage.” 7.9% ABV.

Draft This was tasted at the brewery in Wilmington. The ale poured a deep black with a tan head and some lacing. There was licorice and tobacco in your first drink. The bitterness stayed with the ale throughout the experience. The carbonation was soft and the finish was very smooth. This was a great experience. They serve the black IPA in mugs due to the high alcohol content.
