COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
From the recipe by Peter Josef Früh of the family brewery, this top-fermented specialty beer features the best ingredients and is brewed according to the German Purity Law. A favorite beer of Cologne, which became one of the city’s original.

The only explanation for the low ratings on this site is we must have a lot of extreme beer drinkers who perhaps are unaware of what to look for in this style of beer. Kolsch is one of my favorite styles: a hybrid of ale and lager. Top fermented at warmer ale temps, but cold stored like a lager. The Fruh is a classic Kolsch: light, crisp, lemony, bready, but with a deeper malt base than a typical lager (though it’s an ale). Kolsch features the delicacy of champagne on the palate and a real great session beer poolside.

UPDATED: JAN 12, 2014 @ Sergio’s / Louisville - Pale straw, lots of bubbles rising, 1" rocky white head, bits of lace. Taste is clean-tasting malt with a remarkably soft, light body, faint hints of fruit at the onset, and a light but definite hop finish that yields to the opening malt flavor at the end. Not a big brew, but, oh, so enjoyable. Far above the American examples. One day later (1/12/14): on second thought, this is so far above all other Kolschs I’ve had, it needs better results.

Draft. Crystal clear. Very light yellow, medium-large stark white head with very tiny bubbles, almost looks solid. Soft esters in nose, apple like with a bit of water character, mineral scent. Soft malt palate with a moderate hop bitterness, very dry finish. Only a touch of pils malt character. The hop bitterness is much higher than I expected, almost like a pils urquell, almost. Minerally water comes through in the flavor as well. no real hop flavor.

330ml brown bottle. Yellow pour and a white cap that dies quickly. Grain and a touch of mineral on the nose and a faint fruitiness. In the mouth there is a mineral note, grains and a bit of fruitiness. Light grassy finish with minimal bitterness. Body is light, well carbonated. Refreshing, easily sessionable, enjoyable.

330ml bottle pours straw in color with a small white head that leaves no lacing behind. Aroma is grassy and grainy with some light fruit. Taste is an apple and malty sweetness with some grassy hop bitterness. Light bodied with some moderate carbonation. Nothing special here, just another typical brew for the style.
